F&V Reel Wars In SpaceFROM: DENNIS CONWAY, FOR THE FVS

  DATE: FEB. 2, 2017

The Film and Video Society held its second “Reel Wars” debate of the school year on Wednesday, Feb. 1, in which members and guests debated movie – themed issues for almost an hour.  The evening’s theme covered movies set in outer space.    A close competition ensued, with the “Band Kids” team beating the “Han Shot First” team, 3 rounds to 2.  Two four-person teams competed, before an audience of about 30 people.

Film and Video Society President Nathan Ragland moderated the contest, and Jonathan Bice served as Timekeeper.  The five debate rounds centered on the discussion of questions: 1. Out of all the “Star Wars” anthology movies, and “Rogue One,” which movie based on an individual character should be made first?  2. Of all the Star Trek movie characters, who is the most memorable? 3. What was the worst disaster to occur in a space film?  4. What is the best film ever set in space?,  and 5.  In most space films, who is the real “bad guy:” humans, or aliens & technology?   Judges included Mass Media Professors Gregory Brown and Andrew Black, and student Jabari Bennett.

The “Band Kids” team featured students Samantha Barton, Michael Krafka, Karen Miranda, and Jay Brinson, and their rivals, the “Han Shot First” team comprised students Levi Johnson, Maxwell Steele. Andrew Loyd, and Michael Jacobs.  The next “Reel Wars” debate will feature a discussion of “Disney” movie topics. FVS members are also planning an Oscar party on Sunday, Feb. 26, to view the ceremony onscreen, and cheer for favorites.   Meetings are held on the first and third Wednesday nights of the month, at 7 p.m. in the Mass Media Building.  Please email President Nathan Ragland at ndragland@valdosta.edu for more information about the group.
