On Saturday, February 1st over 600 children, parents, families, and coaches from all over South Georgia attended the annual Southern Regional Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl which was hosted by the Ruby R. Sullivan Literacy Center in the Dewar College of Education and Human Services.
The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl is a unique reading competition in game format using the Georgia Book Award nominees. Teams comprised of students in grades four through twelve from South Georgia competed to test their knowledge of the selected books. The competition was definitely exciting and very intense. The VSU preservice teachers and faculty from the Department of Early Childhood and Special Education as well as Middle Grades, Secondary, Deaf Ed., and Reading Education volunteered their time to work at the event and were amazed by the children’s knowledge of the books and passion for reading.
The winning teams from the Northern and Southern HRRB Divisional Bowls will meet for the State Championship at the University of Georgia on March 8th, 2014. For more information about the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl please visit: http://www.dekalb.k12.ga.us/hrrb/
