COEHS alum Hazel Moon shares her views on the education she received from VSU. Here is Hazel’s Story:
Hazel Moon, BS-Psychology, ’13 is enrolled in the Masters of Public Administration Program at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. Since September, she has been working as a Graduate Assistant for the Associate Provost of Undergraduate Education, Dr. Janette Kenner Muir. Hazel’s first project was to assist in the collection of data for Mason’s application to the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching’s voluntary Community Engagement Classification.
The application involved the compilation of community engagement activities, service learning courses, assessment and outcome data, among other things across all areas of the University. “When I first came to Mason, I did not imagine that I would be working on such a high-profile project so early out of the gate. The experience has allowed me to gain a fuller understanding of the activities going on at Mason and to participate in the development of programs that can assist in becoming a “community-engaged university”.
Dr. Muir has expressed appreciation for Hazel’s work, “We are delighted to have Hazel working with us on this important university initiative. Her skills sets and background have been essential to creating a smooth process and developing the critical aspects of the application. She has put in hundreds of hours of work and, should we be accepted for this ranking, we will have Hazel to thank for this recognition.”
Hazel offers this advice to students, “Follow your passion, but allow yourself to remain open to opportunities when they present themselves. I am hoping to apply my education in human rights to programs that can benefit the higher education system. I am thrilled to be part of the Mason community and I am thankful to VSU for preparing me for the challenge.”
