Speech Communication Program Ignites for Homecoming

By Summerlyn Norton

Homecoming 2014 arrived with perfect, crisp fall weather.

Alumni, students, and friends arrived early Saturday morning to enjoy breakfast treats, a tour of the new Speech Comm  facility, and great seats for the homecoming parade. Our location at the corner of Patterson and Brookwood , which is on the parade route, turned out to be a popular meeting place for our alumni.

The event also featured other activities for guests to enjoy including a photo booth with props, a “Leave Your Mark” sign-in board for alumni, student-designed photo displays of our emphases and student organizations, cornhole competitions, and hotdogs after the parade.

We also raised nearly $300 for the Patterson/Young Scholarship Funds by selling raffle tickets and student-designed Speech Comm Homecoming t-shirts.

The Open House was “the perfect event to network with alumni and enjoy the company of fellow majors,” according to Lauren Burdett, a senior Speech  Comm major.

The Public Relations Campaigns Class planned and hosted the event as part of their senior capstone project.   “It was rewarding to see the event come together successfully,” said Brittany Duren, a member of the planning team. “It was also a valuable learning experience.”
