Georgia Summit

September 17-19:  Several IT staff, along with other VSU employees, will be attending this year’s conference in Augusta, Ga. The purpose of the conference, according to their site, is to facilitate interaction among users of all USG enterprise applications and services. The following presentations will be conducted by our very own IT staff and other related departments:

Information Security Personnel Updates

Bill Moore, former chief information security officer, shared his last with VSU IT on August 29. After many years of dedication and service to the university, Bill has accepted a position at Kennesaw State.

In Bill’s absence, Moe Mondesirinformation security associate, will be the first point of contact for information security issues.

Online Smart Classroom Training

IT Training and Communication has developed Smart Classroom videos and PowerPoints that cover technologies found in most Smart rooms around campus as well as in Jennett Lecture Hall and Health Sciences and Business Administration building. Additionally, an online orientation course in BlazeView have been developed to help student organizations, as well as faculty and staff, become familiar the technology. Employees Can Reset Their Own VoIP Voicemail PINs

Training and Communication Relocation

Degreeworks Maintenance

Production Degreeworks will be out of service for system maintenance starting at 3:00pm on August 22, 2014 to 7:00am on August 29, 2014.

During this time period, users will be unable to access plans, audits, and any other information pulled from Degreeworks. Attempts to transfer to Degreeworks from Banner will result in errors.

If you need access to Degreeworks information during the maintenance period:
Print out a paper copy or save a PDF copy before 3pm Friday on August 22!

What’s New in Office 365

Microsoft has added a few new features to Office 365:

1TB OneDrive for Business
Office 365 now provides users with 1TB (1,000GB) of OneDrive for Business cloud storage. Learn more about OneDrive for Business

Office Web Apps
Web Apps for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote are now available.

Increased Mailbox Storage
Each email account has been provided with 50GB of additional storage.

Office 2013 for Students:
All students have received the Microsoft Student Advantage which allows each student to install Office 2013 (or Office 2011 for Macs) on up to five computers and Office mobile apps on five devices. For steps on downloading Office 2013 or Office mobile apps, view the Microsoft Student Advantage Guide.

Office 2013 for Faculty and Staff:
VSU-owned equipment can be upgraded to Office 2013 by request from Information Technology. However, faculty and staff must purchase “Work At Home” media to install Office 2013 on personal equipment. Learn more about Work at Home Software

Critical Security Software Updates

Tuesday morning at 2:00am on July 29, 2014 campus computers will receive a software update to better protect against viruses, malware, and botnets. The update will automatically restart computers that are left on. Users are strongly urged to save any work before leaving Monday evening, July 28. For computers that are powered off, the restart will occur when powered back on. This campus-wide software update only applies to computers running the Microsoft Windows operating system.

In a continued effort to provide better service, faculty and staff can expect all future updates to be performed during a 2:00 AM Monday night/Tuesday morning. IT will notify the campus community of future updates well in advance. Restarts are expected to be required at least twice monthly on all computers. Some computers may require a technician to manually update the software and if this is needed, someone from IT will come by the department to assist.

Brian Haugabrook, CIO for VSU IT

Valdosta State University President William J. McKinney named Brian Haugabrook Chief Information Officer (CIO) for the Division of Information Technology on July 1, 2014. Haugabrook joined VSU in 2004. In addition to earning a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and a Master of Public Administration, Haugrabrook has advanced within Information Technology as programmer, systems analyst, director of data warehouse, and interim CIO since 2013.
