Critical Security Software Updates

Tuesday morning at 2:00am on July 29, 2014 campus computers will receive a software update to better protect against viruses, malware, and botnets. The update will automatically restart computers that are left on. Users are strongly urged to save any work before leaving Monday evening, July 28. For computers that are powered off, the restart will occur when powered back on. This campus-wide software update only applies to computers running the Microsoft Windows operating system.

In a continued effort to provide better service, faculty and staff can expect all future updates to be performed during a 2:00 AM Monday night/Tuesday morning. IT will notify the campus community of future updates well in advance. Restarts are expected to be required at least twice monthly on all computers. Some computers may require a technician to manually update the software and if this is needed, someone from IT will come by the department to assist.

Brian Haugabrook, CIO for VSU IT

Valdosta State University President William J. McKinney named Brian Haugabrook Chief Information Officer (CIO) for the Division of Information Technology on July 1, 2014. Haugabrook joined VSU in 2004. In addition to earning a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and a Master of Public Administration, Haugrabrook has advanced within Information Technology as programmer, systems analyst, director of data warehouse, and interim CIO since 2013. Banner Offline for Fiscal Year-End

Banner will be offline starting Monday, June 30, at 10:00pm until Tuesday, July 1, at 11:59pm for fiscal year-end processing. During this time Banner INB and  Banner self-service will be inaccessible, and any automated processes or data feeds will not run.  A notice will be sent out when services are restored.

Spotlight: V-State Mobile TV Interview

LightbulbSterlin Sanders, assistant director of TSS, conducted televised news interviews spotlighting V-State Mobile and its approach towards integrating mobile technology with communication between faculty, staff, and students. In the two news segments aired on June 26, Sterlin estimated approximately 400 downloads since the app’s launch. He expects the number of downloads to rise in the fall as more students arrive on campus. The TV interviews also show large support for V-State Mobile by members of the VSU community who find the app convenient and helpful. Great job Sterlin and all those involved in developing the app!

V-State LogoV-State Mobile is available for download! Thanks to the innovative work of Enterprise Applications and Analytics (EAA), project led by Amelia Reams, the Official VSU App can be downloaded on devices with iOS or Android. EAA has also put together a list of Known Issues for the V-State Mobile app. If an unlisted issue is encountered, contact the Mobile App Team.

Cascade Upgrade

Cascade, the online web editor used by VSU, has been upgraded to version 7.10.

Bandwidth Increase

Great news . . . the bandwidth for VSU Wireless has increased!

VSU Wireless

Peachnet has increased the bandwidth from 350 MB to 650 MB.  With this increase, we anticipate a better, faster internet experience for VSU wireless users.

Important: The Heartbleed Bug

The Issue:

There is a new, national technology concern named Heartbleed which involves website encryption and possible disclosure of user account names and passwords.

Researchers have identified a vulnerability in a very popular program that protects the exchange of user names, passwords and other data sent from computers to web servers over the Internet.  Examples of such activities include when you are making purchases from Amazon, logging into your banking web site or logging into various VSU web services.  The Heartbleed vulnerability provides the ability for hackers to capture your user name and passwords and begin exploiting these credentials for their own personal gain (e.g. making purchases through your account or gleaning other personal information).

VSU IT Actions:

You should know that VSU Systems Administrators and the Information Security team have worked diligently to test, update and retest all VSU websites impacted by this discovery and have analyzed 100% of all Internet connected servers.  Additionally, ADP and PeopleSoft websites used for VSU business are now up to date and have passed the Heartbleed vulnerability tests. 

 What Can You Do:

Note: Simply changing your account passwords for all of your online accounts will not be an effective solution until the vulnerable websites have properly addressed and protected their software and network infrastructure.

A few websites have been created to allow users to test various sites for the Heartbleed vulnerability. One such site is http://filippo.io/Heartbleed/Users can simply enter their site of interest (e.g. www.valdosta.edu) into the test field and press the “GO” button. The site will perform it’s test and return the results of “pass”, “fail”, or some “technical details.”  The technical detail results are not an indicator that the site has an issue but you should avoid accessing sites that are identified as “Vulnerable.” 

After a site has been corrected by the web site company (“Passed”), we encourage you to change your passwords for the desired website in case the site and your credentials have been compromised.

What Else Can You Do:

View the Heartbleed Hit List provided by the Mashable website of currently popular sites and services and their exposure to the Heartbleed bug. This is not an exhaustive list nor are the services affiliated with VSU.  Change your passwords on the sites that state a password change is required.

Wireless Maintenance 4-11-14

VSU Wireless will be updated at 10p on 4-11-2014. 

The service will remain online during the maintenance window.  Most mobile phones, tablets, and registered gaming devices will not be affected by this update; however, some devices will need to be reset.
