My subject matter ranges from grotesque imagery to a series of saintly portraits of friends and acquaintances, and my constant concern is the rendering of dramatic lighting and a sense of realism inspired by the post-impressionistic technique of John Singer Sargent. Each piece is planned meticulously before I start applying paint to canvas. My brush-strokes appear spontaneous and palpable; an obvious record of my searching as the image emerges. I have been told that my work makes people feel uncomfortable, yet unable to articulate the origin of their discomfort. My intention is not to disturb, but to share imagery that appeals to my interests and sense of humor.
