MyVSU Portals News Module Improvement

An update to the MyVSU Portals News Widget was just released that improved the selection process of the articles that are displayed.

The appropriate functionality of the of the process is to display any news articles specified as priority first and then randomly select from standard priority articles.  This was difficult because all of the articles were pulled from a single xml feed (http://xml.valdosta.edu/site/newsForMyVSU.xml).  This process has been changed to now use two xml feeds (http://xml.valdosta.edu/site/newsForMyVSU.xml) for priority articles and (http://xml.valdosta.edu/site/nonpriorityNewsForMyVSU.xml) for non-priority.  The article selection process loads the articles from the priority feed first and then, if less than two articles are contained, picks randomly from the non-priority feed until the list has two articles.

Improve Your Site’s Accessibility

Use alt text on images

Alt text provides a text alternative for images that can be read by screen reader software.

Alt text should be relevant, but succinct in relation to the body text around it. Phrases like “Image of…” or “Picture of…” are unnecessary.

How do I add Alt text to the images of my pages in Cascade Server?

Once an image is selected to insert into the body of your page, the Alternative Text field is required to fill out before clicking “Update”.

Establish headers for tables

Tables that contain data need specified table headers in order to help make the content more accessible for users with screen reader software.

How do I add table headers to tables of my pages in Cascade Server?

Build out your table with the structure of the data in mind. In the case below, the top row is the header row that labels the data in the columns.

Using your cursor, highlight the header row. All cells should be highlighted completely.

Right click within one of the highlighted cells. In the pop up menu, go to Cell > Table Cell Properties.

In the Table Cell Properties box, go to the Cell Type select menu and select Header.

Next, go to the bottom select menu (above the Update button) and select Update All Cells in Row. Click Update.

Now the top row is formatted to be a table heading row. This is visually indicated by the text becoming bold.

 Provide captions for video content

Captions should be provided and synchronized whenever video content is used.

How do I add captions to video on my website?

Web Services recommends uploading video content to Youtube and then embedding the video into the body of the web page.

Youtube’s automatic captioning is typically inaccurate, but can be easily edited within Youtube’s interface. Please contact Web Services for assistance on uploading Youtube video, editing captioning, and embedding video onto a web page.

MyVSU Portal Enhancement

MyVSU Enhancements

VSU Web Services, Content Services and Design Services are proud to announce the launch of the revised MyVSU Portal!

What’s new: MyVSU now includes a customizable portal list! Simply click the gear icon on the right side of the portal list to get started. You can rearrange the services, add or remove services, and search for additional services using this feature.

We have also added a more rich content offering, including VSU News, social media, useful links, weather, events, and a photo of the day. Be sure to click “view background” in the top right to reveal current campus conditions in an “Easter egg” illustration.

What’s the same: The new MyVSU is still an enhanced portal, gathering all of your VSU services into one location (located in the the upper right corner of the screen). The portal includes single sign-on access for many services, which allows you to access many of our services (Blazeview, Banner, Email, Galileo, Atomic Learning, Qualtrics, and many more) without having to login for each service. We have also included a messaging service, which will display relevant information to faculty, staff and students using information from the VSU Data Warehouse. Advisors can also use the messaging system to reach out to advisees one-on-one.

So please, take a few minutes to visit the new MyVSU, easily reached by clicking the link at the top of any page on our web site, and use your active directory credentials to access the portal.

We think you’ll appreciate the upgrades we’ve developed, and welcome any feedback at webservices@valdosta.edu or via the Feedback link in the website footer. Before submitting feedback, please see our FAQ for the service.
