{"id":18,"date":"2014-04-25T18:38:36","date_gmt":"2014-04-25T18:38:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.valdosta.edu\/bgs\/?page_id=18"},"modified":"2014-05-02T12:21:49","modified_gmt":"2014-05-02T12:21:49","slug":"history","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blog.valdosta.edu\/bgs\/history\/","title":{"rendered":"Birth of Honor"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"color: #003366;\">Birth of Honor<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In the spring of 1907, a group of commerce\u00a0students at the University of Wisconsin received\u00a0permission from the faculty to organize a commerce\u00a0honor society, which they called Beta \u00a0Gamma Sigma.\u00a0The purpose of the Society was to encourage and\u00a0reward scholarship and accomplishment in the field\u00a0of business studies among commerce students at the\u00a0University. At \u00a0about the same time, students at the\u00a0University of Illinois and the University of\u00a0California felt the need for such an organization\u00a0on their campuses and respectively organized Delta\u00a0Kappa Chi (1910) and The Economics Club (1906). In\u00a01913, having become aware of their coexistence and\u00a0common purpose, representatives of the three\u00a0societies met at Madison, \u00a0Wisconsin, to consummate\u00a0a merger which made Beta Gamma Sigma into a national\u00a0organization.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Action was initiated in 1919 to establish Beta Gamma Sigma as the only scholastic honor society recognized by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). This \u00a0organization, which was renamed AACSB International &#8211; The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, includes in its membership collegiate schools of business that meet high standards of eligibility required of accredited member institutions with respect to curricula, teaching staff, teaching loads, library and laboratory facilities.
