Q: How did your time spent at #VState shape your professional career?
A: While enrolled at VSU, I was the features editor of The Spectator and also interned for The Voice, the VSU alumni magazine. After graduating in 2012, I was accepted into the M.F.A. writing program at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Before I moved to Savannah, my VSU advisor, Dr. Pat Miller, connected me with the news editor of Savannah Morning News. Thanks to her, I had an assignment before even unpacking my bags in Savannah! The journalism skills and experience I gained at VSU helped sustain my freelance career while getting my master’s degree and beyond. I graduated from SCAD in 2015, and I’m now an executive writer for the university’s executive office. I continue to freelance on the side, and my work has been published in The Progressive, The Bitter Southerner, Under the Gum Tree, Savannah Magazine, Atlas Obscura, Scalawag magazine, and Reductress.
