Admission is free of charge and open to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pops in the Park will feature entertaining performances by VSU\u2019s Steel Band, Wind Ensemble, and Spotlighters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Steel Band will provide some fun and light pre-concert music,\u201d shared Dr. Ryan Smith, assistant professor of percussion at VSU. \u201cOur music is selected from traditional island tunes, rock and popular tunes, and newer original tunes for steel drum ensemble. Musically, we try to provide a diverse musical experience for the students and a fun and engaging experience for audiences of all ages.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 12-member Steel Band setlist includes \u201cBrown Eyed Girl\u201d by Van Morrison, \u201cDon\u2019t Stop Believin\u2019\u201d by Journey, and \u201cJump in the Line (Shake Senora)\u201d by Harry Belafonte. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Wind Ensemble\u2019s performance will re-create \u201cthe type of performance presented by community bands 100 years ago, including feature soloists and performances of marches and orchestral transcriptions,\u201d said Dr. Benjamin Harper, conductor, assistant professor of music, and director of bands at VSU. It will also commemorate the 100th anniversary of the day Karl L. King, famed circus band composer and conductor, arrived in Fort Dodge, Iowa, to lead the Fort Dodge Municipal Band, a position he held for 51 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHis contributions to the community and municipal band movement are incalculable,\u201d Harper added. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Wind Ensemble setlist includes the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201cStar-Spangled Banner\u201d by Francis Scott Key;<\/li><li>\u201cBarnum and Bailey\u2019s Favorite\u201d by Karl King;<\/li><li>\u201cAnnie Laurie\u201d by Arthur Pryor, featuring Doug Farwell, head of the Department of Music at VSU, on trombone and guest conductor Skye Holmes, assistant director of bands at VSU;<\/li><li>\u201cSomeone to Watch Over Me\u201d by George and Ira Gershwin, featuring Lara Wilson, soprano and voice professor at VSU;<\/li><li>\u201cLight Cavalry\u201d Overture by Franz von Supp\u00e9, featuring guest conductor Thetheus White, graduate student in conducting at VSU;<\/li><li>\u201cTrombone King\u201d by Karl King;<\/li><li>\u201cBride of the Waves\u201d by Herbert Clarke, featuring Javian Brabham, trumpet professor at VSU;<\/li><li>\u201cBlue Skies\u201d by Irving Berlin, arranged by David Springfield, jazz professor at VSU and featuring Lara Wilson, soprano and voice professor at VSU;<\/li><li>\u201cThe Stars and Stripes Forever\u201d by John Philip Sousa. &nbsp; &nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSpotlighters will present a great short set of pop and jazz arrangements that will be entertaining for everyone,\u201d shared Dr. Clell Wright, director of choral activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 12-member Spotlighters will perform \u201ca wonderful jazz setting of Paul McCartney and John Lennon&#8217;s \u2018If I Fell in Love with You,\u2019 Pentatonix&#8217;s setting of \u2018Cracked,\u2019 Mahalia Jackson&#8217;s \u2018Precious Lord,\u2019 and a new composition by one of our own students, Spencer Phinazee, a music education major from Ellerslie, Georgia.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pops in the Park attendees are welcome to bring their chairs, pillows, and blankets and enjoy an evening of musical performances in the fall fresh air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The College of the Arts Outdoor Amphitheater is located in the grassy area between the Fine Arts Building and Odum Library on VSU\u2019s Main Campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the health and safety of everyone attending Pops in the Park, social distancing will be enforced. When social distancing is not possible outdoors, the University System of Georgia policy states that masks covering the nose and mouth are required to be worn on the VSU campus.
