{"id":497,"date":"2015-04-02T13:38:48","date_gmt":"2015-04-02T13:38:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.valdosta.edu\/coa\/?p=497"},"modified":"2025-11-25T14:23:23","modified_gmt":"2025-11-25T19:23:23","slug":"vsu-hosts-south-georgia-region-honor-bands-april-9-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.valdosta.edu\/coa\/2015\/04\/02\/vsu-hosts-south-georgia-region-honor-bands-april-9-11\/","title":{"rendered":"VSU Hosts South Georgia Region Honor Bands April 9-11"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>VALDOSTA \u2014 Valdosta State University will welcome about 300 middle school and high school band students to campus Thursday, April 9, for the 2015 South Georgia Region Honor Bands event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the only region band event in Georgia and is always held on our campus,\u201d said Joe H. Brashier, director of bands and professor of music at the university. \u201cIt is great exposure for VSU and our band program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Representing 78 schools from Macon to the Georgia-Florida line, the students will spend three days perfecting music for a free, public performance at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, in Whitehead Auditorium. They will rehearse a minimum of 10 hours as a group with a guest conductor.<\/p>\n<p>Rick Fleming, director of bands at Buffalo State College in Buffalo, N.Y., will lead the region honor band for students in grades 11 and 12. At Buffalo State, he conducts the Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble and was recently appointed conductor of the Silver Brass Band. He is a native of Mississippi and holds degrees from Mississippi Valley State University, the University of Mississippi, and Florida State University. He is active as a freelance trombonist.<\/p>\n<p>Miles Adams will lead the honor band for students in grades nine and 10; his wife, Helen Adams, will lead the middle school honor band. The duo recently retired after 30 years as band directors in the Jackson County School System. They both hold Bachelor of Music Education degrees from Berry College and graduate degrees from the University of Georgia.<\/p>\n<p>Brashier noted that the students were selected to participate in the South Georgia Region Honor Bands based on their first- and second-round All-State auditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is highly competitive,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Contact Joe H.
