Professional Development Day

Dewar College of Education and Human Services – Professional Development Day

Recently, Ms. Chelonnda Seroyer was the featured speaker for Professional Development Day in the Dewar College of Education and Human Services.   Over 200 students from all departments within the COE were in attendance and were enthralled with her message.  In fact, at the end of her presentation, she received a standing ovation from everyone!

Ms. Seroyer, who travels internationally with Rosemary and Harry Wong, began her educational career as a high school English teacher in Madison, Alabama.  She used Dr. Wong’s book, The First Days of School, as an “instructional manual” to set up her first classroom.  At the end of her first year of teaching she was awarded the “Patriot Award.”  This award is given to a faculty member in recognition of valuable contributions, dedication, and service to the education community.  Her continued success as a teacher has garnered her many additional awards as well as the “Teacher of the Year” award.   Ms. Seroyer now serves as an educational consultant traveling all over the country offering inspirational and effective teaching practices that help educators be the best they can be!

Ms. Seroyer shared her own personal story as well as many successful classroom management techniques with the students.  One of her challenges to the students was to create their own customized and effective classroom management plan and have it in place on their first day of teaching.  Many students have taken her advice and are ready for their teaching careers to begin.  Positive comments such as:  “Ms. Seroyer is an inspiration to new teachers and has inspired me” , “Ms. Seroyer was amazing, and inspired me so much that I KNOW I am ready!” and “ I learned so much today” were just a few of the student remarks.

Professional Development Day is provided each semester for all teacher candidates during their clinical practice experience by the Office of Field Experiences and Clinical Practice.  Each student received the latest edition of The First Days of School in hopes that they will have many successful years as a TEACHER!  Many thanks to all that made this day a success!
