{"id":86,"date":"2014-12-02T12:00:49","date_gmt":"2014-12-02T12:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.valdosta.edu\/comarts\/?p=86"},"modified":"2014-12-09T21:40:18","modified_gmt":"2014-12-09T21:40:18","slug":"speech-communication-faculty-receive-7500-grant-to-study-rural-healthcare-giver-needs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.valdosta.edu\/comarts\/2014\/12\/02\/speech-communication-faculty-receive-7500-grant-to-study-rural-healthcare-giver-needs\/","title":{"rendered":"Speech Communication Faculty Receive $7,500 Grant to Study Rural Healthcare Giver Needs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Alexe Kalariotes<\/p>\n<p>Caregivers and patients who commute from a rural community for their healthcare have different needs and burdens than other populations, according to the research being conducted by Dr. William Faux \u00a0and Dr. Molly Stoltz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are interested in the commute that people have to make for health care and are looking at it from the caregiver\u2019s perspective,\u201d said Stoltz.<\/p>\n<p>They received a $7,500 grant for the 2013 summer term to conduct a series of interviews with rural health caregivers to better \u00a0understand their needs.<\/p>\n<p>Their research tells the stories of the many journeys and obstacles of health care through a different lens. The commute is physically and emotionally draining for both the caregiver and the patient, Stoltz said. \u201cThe caregiver has to be prepared for crisis and high-stress situations at any given time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the narratives we have collected so far there seems to be an applied area within which we can work,\u201d said Faux. They are developing \u00a0a check list for what to do in an emergency situation especially when a long commute is required.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This study addresses a variety of different factors such as distance, time, and \u201ccare for the other\u201d versus \u201ccare for the self,\u201d he explained.
