I am more of a traditionalist, where pen and paper with a physical book is the name of the game. Words printed on paper to form a good coherent story or thought-provoking narrative. It does not matter who you are, where you come from, or style, I want to see quality in Odradek.

Human tradition to sit by a fire and tell stories of beasts and gods, ghosts and ghouls, span over hundreds of thousands of years of history; this tradition has not slowed down—it has not waned. Now more than ever, do we have a story, do we have a need for voice, for the individual to shout or sing, (maybe literally) for others to sit and listen. I look for poetry with beats in the roots of all kinds of people, all colors, all races—spoken or written—to showcase how far we have come as a society and how far still we need to go. Poetry that speaks of nature or love or struggles others cannot voice. I look for fiction, tales in the style of graphic novels and written stories, experimenting with style and voice. Prose that makes a person wonder what a story looks like on paper or screen while taking us on a journey to another planet or alternate universe, or here on earth. Perhaps keep it traditional, simple but effective as thousands have done before in comfort. I look for Art and Media that is physical or digital or both. Can we display it out with Odradek? Can it be viewed on a digital platform? Is it a mini movie or a video? I look for it.

For Odradek I would like to see writing that represents our student body. Forms of
literature and representation that maybe bend the rules a little bit. I would love to take time reading literature that is representative of the diversity of our student body, literature and writing that means something to the author and to readers. Pushing limits, bending rules, representative, meaningful; I would like to see writing that is maybe not aesthetically pleasing to the eye or social constructs of what literature ‘should be,’ but is aesthetically pleasing to a reader’s connection to literature and the emotions we feel as readers and writers.

I think the type of writing I’d most like to see is short fiction. Stories that are maybe a page or two long. Ones that elicit strong emotions. I like the creativity that comes with trying to tell a story in a short amount of time. The idea of a story being left unresolved and up to the reader in particular I find very interesting. I do also really enjoy free verse and prose poetry.
