{"id":1660,"date":"2010-09-24T13:25:15","date_gmt":"2010-09-24T18:25:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.valdosta.edu\/library\/blog\/?p=1660"},"modified":"2010-09-24T13:25:15","modified_gmt":"2010-09-24T18:25:15","slug":"banned-books-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.valdosta.edu\/library\/2010\/09\/24\/banned-books-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Banned Books Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tomorrow is the first day of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/ala\/issuesadvocacy\/banned\/index.cfm\">Banned Books Week<\/a>, celebrating <strong>your right to read what you want to read<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The American Library Association lists the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/ala\/issuesadvocacy\/banned\/frequentlychallenged\/21stcenturychallenged\/index.cfm\">top 10 most challenged* books<\/a> each year since 2001.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You can check out many of these <a href=\"http:\/\/gilfind.valdosta.edu\/vufind\/Search\/Home?lookfor=challenged+top+10&amp;type=tag&amp;SubBut.x=0&amp;SubBut.y=0&amp;SubBut=Find&amp;sort=year\">controversial books<\/a> from Odum Library<\/strong>, including Stephenie Meyers&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/gilfind.valdosta.edu\/vufind\/Record\/539322\"><em>Twilight<\/em><\/a>, Mark Twain&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/gilfind.valdosta.edu\/vufind\/Record\/266843\"><em>Adventures of Huckleberry Finn<\/em><\/a>, and Robert Cormier&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/gilfind.valdosta.edu\/vufind\/Record\/353130\"><em>The Chocolate War<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>*<em>&#8220;A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/ala\/issuesadvocacy\/banned\/aboutbannedbooks\/index.cfm\">challenge<\/a> is an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon  the  objections of a person or group. A banning is the removal of those   materials.
