They\u2019ve helped people to define and navigate the world around them as far back as 16,500 BC and continue to do so in the 21st century. That\u2019s why Stamen and the Digital Scholarship Lab at the University of Richmond decided to upgrade the U.S. map in a project known as \u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dsl.richmond.edu\/panorama\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">American Panorama<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u201d Funded by the Mellon Foundation, American Panorama isn\u2019t just a single geographical map of the U.S., it\u2019s a set of historical atlases covering a wide-range of significant stories in U.S. history. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These are the stories they are telling: <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/dsl.richmond.edu\/panorama\/forcedmigration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Forced Migration<\/a> of Enslaved People in the United States<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-146306\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/visualnews-wp-media-prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/15170642\/forced-migration-map.png\" alt=\"American Panorama: Forced Migration Map\" width=\"1181\" height=\"658\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c[S]howing the movement of nearly a million people, the majority through the domestic slave trade, across the South in the half-century before the Civil War.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/dsl.richmond.edu\/panorama\/overlandtrails\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Overland Trails<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-146308\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/visualnews-wp-media-prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/15170722\/the-overland-trails.png\" alt=\"American Panorama: The Overland Trails\" width=\"1181\" height=\"658\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c[M]apping the long and arduous emigrations of men and women over the Oregon, California and Mormon Trails in the 1840s and 50s.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/dsl.richmond.edu\/panorama\/foreignborn\/#decade=2010\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Foreign-Born Population<\/a>: A Nation of Overlapping Diasporas<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-146307\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/visualnews-wp-media-prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/15170659\/foreign-born-population.png\" alt=\"American Panorama: Foreign Born Population\" width=\"1181\" height=\"658\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c[E]nabling users to explore the connections that tied migrants to the U.S. to the places they were born.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/dsl.richmond.edu\/panorama\/canals\/#canal=22&amp;year=1849&amp;loc=7\/0.464\/17.042\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Canals<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-146305\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/visualnews-wp-media-prod\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/15170634\/canals.png\" alt=\"American Panorama: Canals\" width=\"1181\" height=\"658\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c[M]apping the growth of artificial waterways and economic development in the antebellum period by presenting data about the commodities and products that moved across the canals.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The maps are completely unique and offer up important narratives as told by historians and storytellers about the history of the United States.
