A new study from Creative Artists Agency debunks that theory, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/movies\/la-et-mn-caa-diversity-study-exclusive-20170622-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">a Los Angeles Times report<\/a>, and the results are fairly definitive: &#8220;The average opening weekend for a film that attracts a diverse audience, often the result of having a diverse cast, is nearly three times on average a film with non-diverse audiences.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2017\/04\/snl-pepsi-trump-louis-ck-diversity-1201803723\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">READ MORE: Why <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/diversity\/\" id=\"auto-tag_diversity\">Diversity<\/a> In the Entertainment Business Will Save Us From Stupid, Offensive Mistakes<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/caa\/\" id=\"auto-tag_caa\">CAA<\/a>&#8217;s Christy Haubegger Talitha Watkins put the Motion Picture Diversity Index together. Haubegger stated the results plainly: \u201cOne of the interesting things that the most successful movies share is that they\u2019re broadly appealing to diverse audiences,&#8221; she said. &#8220;People want to see a world that looks like theirs.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After crunching the numbers \u2014 nonwhite people make up 38% of the population but accounted for 45% of theatrical audiences last year \u2014 they looked at 413 different movies released between 2014 and 2016. Again, the results were clear: &#8220;At every budget level, a film with a cast that is at least 30% non-white \u2014 CAA\u2019s definition of a &#8216;truly diverse&#8217; film \u2014 outperforms a release that is not truly diverse in opening weekend box office.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2017\/04\/marvel-diversity-female-characters-1201799714\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">READ MORE: Marvel Executive Says Comic Readers \u2018Didn\u2019t Want Any More Diversity\u2019 or Female Characters<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That can be seen in smaller movies like &#8220;Get Out&#8221; and &#8220;Hidden Figures&#8221; and in blockbusters like &#8220;Rogue One&#8221; and &#8220;The Fate of the Furious.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe hope is that seeing real numbers attached to the success of the inclusion of more voices and diverse casts will be further motivation for studios, networks and others to be really conscious of the opportunity,\u201d said Richard Lovett, president of CAA.
