The upcoming <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/netflix\/\" id=\"auto-tag_netflix\">Netflix<\/a> drama is based on a Japanese manga and, not unlike &#8220;Ghost in the Shell,&#8221; has changed Japanese characters into American ones: Nat Wolff plays Light Turner (the updated version of Light Yagami), while Margaret Qualley is Mia Sutton (Misa Amane).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Director <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/adam-wingard\/\" id=\"auto-tag_adam-wingard\">Adam Wingard<\/a> addressed those claims to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2017\/08\/death-note-director-adam-wingard-on-whitewashing-criticisms.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Vulture<\/a>, saying that his take on \u201cDeath Note\u201d isn\u2019t \u201cjust taking a character and trying to say a white kid is a Japanese kid. It is a whole new thing. The characters are all very different and it is a different kind of experience all together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"pmc-related-link read-more\">\n\t\t\t<strong class=\"pmc-related-type\">Read More:<\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2017\/07\/death-note-netflix-movie-reaction-comic-con-1201858232\/\" title=\"\u2018Death Note\u2019: Controversial Netflix Adaptation Gets Mixed Reaction at Comic-Con\">\u2018Death Note\u2019: Controversial Netflix Adaptation Gets Mixed Reaction at Comic-Con<\/a>\n\t\t<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wingard, who also directed &#8220;You&#8217;re Next&#8221; and &#8220;Blair Witch,&#8221; got defensive about the same subject a couple months back: &#8220;Just clearing up misconceptions.No one has seen the film outside of 2 test screenings,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AdamWingard\/status\/871896510098579456\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">tweeted<\/a>. \u201cCriticisms at this point are based on assumptions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Two of the film&#8217;s producers spoke up in defense of &#8220;Death Note&#8221; as well. \u201cI think we got the right actors for the parts that were written,\u201d said Roy Lee, whose prior credits include \u201cThe Departed\u201d and \u201cThe Ring.\u201d \u201cWe didn\u2019t look at race as a factor. But this wasn\u2019t specifically a racially bound story, because it was set in America,\u201d added Masi Oka, late of &#8220;Heroes.&#8221; \u201cAnyone could have played that title role, whether it was white, African-American, Latino-American, or Asian-American.
