Case in point: Saturday&#8217;s hugely attended &#8220;Wonder Women&#8221; panel, moderated by\u00a0director Peter Sellars and boasting a panel that included actress and filmmaker <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/angelina-jolie\/\" id=\"auto-tag_angelina-jolie\">Angelina Jolie<\/a>, lauded chef and\u00a0restaurateur Alice Waters, tennis champ Billie Jean King (the subject of the Telluride premiere &#8220;Battle of the Sexes&#8221;), and actress and filmmaker Natalie Portman.<\/p>\n<p>Jolie was at the annual Colorado film festival to bow her latest directorial effort, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/first-they-killed-my-father\/\" id=\"auto-tag_first-they-killed-my-father\">First They Killed My Father<\/a>,&#8221; which debuted the night before the panel. Despite a few missteps, it\u2019s the clearest illustration of her filmmaking talent to date.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jolie, who has long been outspoken in her political beliefs and currently serves as a Special Envoy to the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, spoke out about the &#8220;very dark time&#8221; unspooling in current culture. For Jolie, the parallels between the current political climate and other historical instances that have seen countries and groups devolve into hatred (and worse) was top of mind, as her latest film is centered on the true-life stories of Cambodian refugees who were massacred by the Khmer Rouge.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1201871861\" style=\"width: 790px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1201871861\" src=\"http:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/1280_first_they_killed_my_father_netflix.jpg?w=780\" alt=\"\" width=\"780\" height=\"439\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;First They Killed My Father&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The film is based on the non-fiction book of the same name, penned by Loung Ung, who was just 5 when Khmer Rouge took over Cambodia.
