So I recommend you all get fat.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The aforementioned shots left him &#8220;a little buzzed.&#8221; &#8220;I go, &#8216;Okay guys, let&#8217;s catch up,&#8217; and they say, &#8216;We changed our mind[s], we&#8217;re not going to drink,&#8217;&#8221; cueing del Toro&#8217;s exit. As he neared the door, however, he spotted Hawkins, a nominee that night for &#8220;Blue Jasmine,&#8221; whose agent he&#8217;d already contacted about another role. &#8220;&#8216;Sally! (Photo by Charley Gallay\/Getty Images for Vulture Festival)\" width=\"780\" height=\"557\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Cuar\u00f3n <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2017\/10\/alfonso-cuaron-shape-of-water-review-roma-production-release-1201887727\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">declared<\/a> the resulting film\u00a0\u2014 which came in under budget, at <a href=\"http:\/\/variety.com\/2017\/film\/features\/director-guillermo-del-toro-1202543106\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">$19.5 million<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 &#8220;amazingly sublime,&#8221; and del Toro says it&#8217;s among the most personal of his 10 features.\u00a0&#8220;Three movies in my life have come to me at really, really, really low points in my life, and they have saved my\u00a0\u2014 I wouldn&#8217;t say sanity\u00a0\u2014 but my life, really,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>First, &#8220;The Devil&#8217;s Backbone&#8221; (2001) provided solace following &#8220;a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2017\/10\/guillermo-del-toro-harvey-weinstein-mimic-horrible-experience-1201886601\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">catastrophic experience<\/a> with &#8216;Mimic,&#8217; at Miramax\/Dimension, which is still the worst experience I&#8217;ve ever had.&#8221; Five years later, he said the idea for &#8220;Pan&#8217;s Labyrinth&#8221; arrived when he was &#8220;questioning many, many things,&#8221; including &#8220;what we do, what we leave behind, [and] who we are.&#8221; The film won three Oscars.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read More:\u00a0<\/strong><a title=\"\u2018The Shape of Water\u2019 Review: Guillermo del Toro\u2019s Lush Fairy Tale Is a Powerful Vision of Love\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018The Shape of Water\u2019 Review: Guillermo del Toro\u2019s Lush Fairy Tale Is a Powerful Vision of Love<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Del Toro, 53, was feeling &#8220;great darkness&#8221; when he though up\u00a0&#8220;The Shape of Water&#8221;\u00a0\u2014 a Cold War\u2013era romance between a mute janitor (Hawkins) and a creature imprisoned inside the lab where she works (Jones), often referred to as &#8220;the asset&#8221; (credited as &#8220;Amphibian Man&#8221;).\u00a0&#8220;A mentor in Mexico\u00a0\u2014 one of the filmmakers I admire the most\u00a0\u2014 he saw it and he said, &#8216;You&#8217;ve finally exhaled,&#8217;&#8221; revealed del Toro, who will take a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2017\/10\/guillermo-del-toro-taking-break-from-directing-1201891518\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">directing hiatus<\/a> through September 2018.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">&#8220;This movie is a healing movie for me&#8230;For nine movies I rephrased the fears of my childhood, the dreams of my childhood, and this is the first time I speak as an adult, about something that worries me as an adult. I speak about trust, otherness, sex, love, where we&#8217;re going.
