We\u2019re sharing this unedited interview from the StoryCorps Archive with you in its original form.<\/em><\/p>\n If you find yourself in a panic over your poultry this Thanksgiving, there\u2019s a toll-free number you can call!\u00a0<\/span>The Butterball Turkey Talk-Line<\/a>,<\/span>\u00a0which began in 1981, is where you can find experts like Marjorie Klindera and Carol Miller on the other end of the line to answer all of your bird-related questions. In November 2015, Marjorie and Carol recorded a StoryCorps conversation about the over 30 years they have each worked the talkline and shared stories about their favorite calls. \u00a0Long-time fans of StoryCorps may remember\u00a0an edited version of this interview that aired on\u00a0<\/a><\/span>NPR\u2019s Morning Edition<\/span>, but this full-length recording includes a plethora of stories that never made it into the two-minute broadcast.<\/span><\/p>\n Carol tells the story of a caller whose home was destroyed by Hurricane Andrew. \u00a0All she had to cook with was a microwave, but \u201cshe was bound and determined to make a traditional Thanksgiving meal for her family.\u201d The caller told Carol, \u201cI\u2019ve got so much to be thankful for \u2014 I have my family.”<\/span><\/p>\n Marjorie recounts the story of a caller who wasn\u2019t calling to ask a question, but \u201ccalling to brag that he had solved his own problem \u2014 his turkey was too big for the pan that he had, and his solution was to wrap the turkey in a towel, stomp on it and break some bones, then it fit in the pan,\u201d she says. \u201cHe was very proud of himself!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n <\/i>Carol remembers a call she received from a young man who wanted to propose on Thanksgiving day. \u201cHe wanted to mix diamond ring in the stuffing and then stuff it inside the turkey.\u201d \u00a0She convinced him that that wasn\u2019t a good idea and together they came up with a new plan. \u201cEvery year, I think about him,\u201d she says. \u201c<\/span>If<\/span><\/i>\u00a0she said yes and if everything went well, they\u2019ve now got the kids around the dining room table, they\u2019ve got the grandkids around the table, and I\u2019m sure every year grandpa tells that story.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n If things don\u2019t go perfectly to plan though, \u201cIt\u2019s [about] having the family together,\u201d says Marjorie. \u201cThe food, we try to make it as perfect as we can, but it doesn\u2019t come down to that.\u201d Carol adds, \u201cAnd it\u2019s kind of funny if something goes wrong, ’cause then you\u2019ve got a memory for years and years!\u201d \u00a0<\/span>The job requires them to work an eight hour day on the holiday, but they are happy to do it because, as Carol says, \u201cWe cannot desert America on Thanksgiving!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\t\t\t\t
