On this day, we recognize the ongoing fight against HIV, show solidarity with the estimated 36.7 million people living with HIV worldwide, and honor those who have died from AIDS-related illnesses. In these interviews from the StoryCorps App, people share the impact that AIDS has had upon their lives and the lives of their loved ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-88245 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/storycorpsorg-staging.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/Hippler450x450-1.jpg\" alt=\"Hippler450x450\" width=\"450\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.storycorps.org\/interviews\/celebrating-michael\/#description\" target=\"_blank\">Sisters Melissa Hippler (left) and Judy Hippler Bello<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0remember their brother, author and journalist Michael Hippler, who died of AIDS-related complications on April 2nd, 1991. They describe Michael as a multi-talented storyteller, writer and advocate \u2014 \u201cthe toast of each town\u201d when he was living in New York and San Francisco.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Judy and Melissa share how the night before he passed away, Michael\u2019s friends came to see him in the hospital. \u201cHe entertained everyone,\u201d Judy says, \u201cIt was a stand up comedy act \u2014 the only difference was he wasn\u2019t standing! He was the MC; he was the host with the most; he gave his monologue; he interviewed people; he had everyone in stitches.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-88247 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/storycorpsorg-staging.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/Windle450x450-1.jpg\" alt=\"Windle450x450\" width=\"450\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.storycorps.org\/interviews\/caring-in-the-face-of-aids\/\" target=\"_blank\">Henry Windle interviews his mother, Dr. Stephanie Windle (left)<\/a><\/strong>, about the role she played in founding the first AIDS treatment clinic in Wisconsin. Dr. Windle, now an Assistant Professor of Nursing at San Francisco State University, talks about the pervasive fear of HIV among nurses in the 1980s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cNobody knew if you could catch it by taking care of a patient,\u201d she says. \u201cI remember making a decision at one point, when no nurses would come into that patient room. I thought, this is not going to happen, I am not going to be one of those people that don\u2019t come in the room \u2014 and it defined my career.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-88246 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/storycorpsorg-staging.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/Howser450x450-1.jpg\" alt=\"Howser450x450\" width=\"450\" height=\"336\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In\u00a0an interview recorded at the Art AIDS America exhibition in Chicago,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.storycorps.org\/interviews\/two-chicago-friends-talk-about-being-gay-spiritual-and-the-impact-of-hiv-aids\/\" target=\"_blank\">friends Stephen Starr (left) and Dave Howser<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0talk about growing up in the Baptist Church, coming out as gay in the midst of the AIDS crisis, and the ways that witnessing the impact of HIV and AIDS has changed their spirituality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After completing seminary, Dave moved to Chicago to serve as the resident AIDS chaplain at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke\u2019s Medical Center. \u201cThat could have been me,\u201d he says, recalling the AIDS-related death of a young patient. \u201cI had to decide at that point, was I going to allow HIV\/AIDS to keep me from living a full and fulfilling life?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All material within the StoryCorps collection is copyrighted by StoryCorps.
