The Office of Sponsored Programs and Research Administration congratulates all of our recent awardees!  We sincerely appreciate all the time and energy that has gone into creating a successful grant proposal and program.  Please join us in recognizing the VSU faculty who have been awarded.

Faculty and programs are listed below in alphabetical order.

Dr. John Barbas of the Chemistry department was awarded a grant from the Optima Chemical Group to perform NMR and GC – MS analysis of samples supplied by Optima Chemicals, LLC.

Lynn Bennett of the Small Business Development Center was awarded renewed funding for the Valdosta Small Business Development Center.  The Center is a public service outreach unit that provides business and economic development assistance for Atkinson, Berrien, Brooks, Clinch, Coffee, Cook, Echols, Lanier, Lowndes, and Thomas Counties in South Central Georgia.  As part of VSU’s Harley Langdale, Jr. College of Business Administration, the SBDC is an essential resource for small businesses.  Practical experience combined with advanced education gives SBDC consultants the ability to apply current business theory to the challenges faced by today’s entrepreneurs.

Dr. Dorothy Dye’s Adult Day Care, My Friend’s House, has been awarded continued funding for the 2017-2018 fiscal year by the Southern Georgia Regional Commission’s Agency of Aging.  Through its Alzheimer’s Daycare Program, My Friend’s House provides a day program for senior citizens who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. It is a free service that promotes social, physical, creative, and cognitive stimulation through such activities as exercise, music, bingo, arts and crafts, hug therapy, laughter, and more.

Dr. Brian Haugabrook received a Collaborative Capacity Grant, sponsored by the Board of Regents.  The CCC grant funds a symposium and proof of value solution which will demonstrate the ability to create a standards-based platform for analytics that can be used throughout the University System of Georgia.

Russell Hoff was awarded a Sports Mind Matters Challenge Grant from the NCAA to develop a concussion reporting intervention aimed at improving concussion reporting across NCAA divisions.

Dr. Jia Lu of Geosciences received an USG Affordable Learning Georgia Textbook grant to offer low-cost, high quality, and interesting learning materials for students in the introductory to environmental science course. By offering this new open access textbook and OERs at no cost to the students, it is hoped to improve both course enrollment and drop, fail, and withdrawal rates.

Dr. Mizanur Miah of the Social Work Department was awarded renewed funding for the Title IV-E Child Welfare Education Program from the US Department of Health and Human Services.  The Title IV-E Program helps to strengthen public child welfare service initiatives by developing and retaining a stable workforce of educated and professional social workers.

Dr. Peggy Moch was awarded the Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) grant, sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  The Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) program assists universities and colleges in their efforts to significantly increase the numbers of students matriculating into and successfully completing high quality degree programs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines in order to diversify the STEM workforce. Particular emphasis is placed on transforming undergraduate STEM education through innovative, evidence-based recruitment and retention strategies, and relevant educational experiences in support of racial and ethnic groups historically underrepresented in STEM disciplines

Herb Reinhard, Karla Hull, and Jennifer Grubbs were awarded a NCAA Strategic Alliance Matching Grant to enhance the Director of Student-Athlete Development/SWA position. The purpose of the position is to enhance the student-athlete experience at Valdosta State University by improving student-athlete development programming, diversity and inclusion initiatives, and collaborative efforts within the university and with the local community.

Dr. Michael Savoie received an award from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum to allow select student leaders the opportunity to explore the history of the holocaust and its relevance for today’s college students.

Dr. Anthony Scheffler has been awarded a Competency Based Education Initiative grant from the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia to continue and extend VSU’s current offering of STEM teacher certifications in a competency-based education (CBE) format from pilot to operational phase.
