The budget would eliminate or reduce many programs of interest to higher education institutions, such as Strengthening Institutions while leaving some key programs more or less as they are and providing notable increases to programs supporting charter schools. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aascu.org\/grc\/grantweekweb.aspx?id=11775&amp;pubdate=2017-06-05#10\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>FY 18 Budget Request: NSF<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The National Science Foundation (NSF) would see an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aip.org\/fyi\/2017\/trump-budget-cuts-nsf-11\">11 percent<\/a>\u00a0decrease in total funding under a new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/about\/budget\/\">budget request<\/a>\u00a0recently released by the Trump Administration. The bulk of the $819 million cut to NSF would fall on the Research and Related Activities account, which would decrease 11 percent below FY 17 levels to $5.4 billion. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aascu.org\/grc\/grantweekweb.aspx?id=11775&amp;pubdate=2017-06-05#20\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>FY18 Budget Request: NASA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>President Trump has released the full version of his FY 18 budget request, a fleshed-out version of the &#8220;skinny budget&#8221; the administration\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aascu.org\/grc\/GrantWeekWeb.aspx?id=11775&amp;&amp;pubdate=2017-03-27\">released<\/a>\u00a0in March of this year.\u00a0The budget leaves funding for NASA\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aip.org\/fyi\/2017\/trump-budget-cuts-nasa-earth-science-boosts-planetary-science\">relatively stable<\/a>; the agency as a whole would receive a funding decrease of about 3 percent from the FY 17 enacted budget. However, within that larger number are marked shifts in research priorities, as the budget request continues a government-wide pivot away from earth and climate science.
