Jim Jones,\u00a0<\/a>Associate Professor at GRC member\u00a0institution George Mason University (GMU), is the recipient of two groundbreaking federal awards totaling $80 million dollars.\u00a0Support from the\u00a0Department of Homeland Security<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0the National Institute of Standards and Technology\u00a0<\/a>will enable\u00a0him and his team of researchers to\u00a0explore and improve issues in forensic science, criminal investigations and network analysis. Jones briefly spoke about the awards and proceeded to share lessons learned during his presentation at the 2018 GRC Grants Competitiveness Conference.<\/p>\n

Ironically, he felt it was the\u00a0power of\u00a0soft skills<\/a>— a skillset\u00a0gaining more\u00a0traction in the world of hard sciences– that played a significant role in creating new research opportunities\u00a0at GMU. Here are\u00a0five takeaways\u00a0worth exploring with your pre-award team before seeking a new funding opportunity:<\/p>\n

1. Know the sponsor\/customer.\u00a0Prior interaction and relationship-building\u00a0increased\u00a0his teams’ ability to\u00a0connect the work with the funders’ priorities.<\/p>\n

2. Get professional help and\/or leadership support for the big awards.<\/p>\n

3. Rewrite most of what your team has written, if possible.<\/p>\n

4. Hold critical review with time to edit.<\/p>\n
