A native Floridian, Brittany Morales’ craft is dominated by self-portraiture, nudity and sexuality. Her formal training brought her from a small town that was geared towards repressing self-expression. While at Valdosta State University, where she received her Bachelors in Fine Arts, her desire to express herself blossomed. With her newfound curiosity, a sense of creative freedom, and a little bit of bravery, her artwork delved into themes of intimacy. Using her own body to illustrate such raw and confident topics through photography and drawing allowed her to move past her early feelings of timidness and the low self-esteem she grew up with. This body of work looks to empower others to be confident and achieve a sense of self-love and acceptance.
My self-portraiture is inspired by 60’s and 70’s freedom of female sexuality. My pieces challenge the male gaze and are unapologetically sexually charged in a manner that isn’t for a man to ogle over. I embrace explicit nudity and erotic themes but that does not make my pieces pornographic. My sexuality is still something so new to me that I am exploring deeper with each piece I create. Being both the photographer and subject has helped me to push myself to discover who I am visually and who I aspire to be. My art focuses on my relationship and intimacy with myself. I immortalize raw moments that express my passions, struggles, and desires because that is what is most important to me as a person. My body is a canvas that I am happy to explore with my photography and drawings. I am very open about my sexual experiences and preferences, it has allowed me to embrace sex and body image positive life styles. I am confident and more in tune with myself because I’ve been able to explore these themes sexually and artistically. I can confidently say now that I love who I’ve become.
