Casey Daniel currently lives in Valdosta, Georgia and received her B.F.A. from Valdosta State University. Raised in Virginia with her three sisters, her work reflects her family history. She enjoys a wide range of mediums but currently works in ceramics. Daniel was diagnosed with Chiari Malformation type 1, she often creates illustrations that depict the struggles of living with this medical issue. She plans to receive her Activity Director certification where she can help others in nursing homes enjoy art.
I use ceramics and painting, as well as other mediums, to depict my Chiari Malformation, a brain deformation that causes pain and effects my mobility in my limbs. I research and view surgery videos that show the deformation, and the procedures used to correct the deformation, as a way to better educate myself. I also explore in my ceramic vessels the after effects that the medicine or surgery can have on the human body such as; harming the heart, weakening the skull, and spine. The imagery I use started as a way to educate myself about my own condition, it later morphed into a discussion over the wide range of effects that affect the human body.
