Nature has been a main influence on the way Katherine Ogletree produces artwork. From growing up playing outside, to personal research on ecology, everything pertaining to Mother Nature entices her mind. Based on her studies of the elements and principles found naturally within her surroundings, she implements organic and geometric line and color. She employs the viewers’ eyes to look inward for the meaning of these works by including the human form. These three interests of line, color, and their connection to the viewer, lead her to graphic design work. Understanding this arranged relationship between art and viewer helps her to create designs tailored to the audiences she targets. She combines these topics to create interestingly designed, interactive products.
Ogletree has studied at Valdosta State University for her Bachelor of Fine Arts, in Art. Focusing in graphic design, she will go on to become an art director, while opening an online shop to sell commissioned works.
Throughout my life, my surroundings have influenced the artworks I create. The most notable influence is the Earth itself. The organic shapes and the vibrant colors have had the biggest impact on why and how I create my work. After seeing these elements and principles of design hidden within the world around me, both organically and manmade, combining the two seemed natural and necessary. Beginning with figure studies, line weight is now a key component within my works as well and how color enhances that line weight and attention to detail. By including the human figure and applying my theme to a relatable image, I can create a connection with the viewer. The cohesive relationship between line, color, and figure can be utilized to tell a story without words, create feelings without touch, and meaning without explanation.
My current work also focuses on marrying line and color together within my graphic design pieces to create effective marketing of products. Just as I approach my drawings, my designs are meant to draw viewers in to look at the details. The inclusion of the figure is then applied to the audience, as they interact with my work. Through understanding of the elements and principles, I’ve created a diversified and eye-catching portfolio.
