Marsica Burrow is currently a Valdosta State University student studying to obtain a B.F.A. in Fine Arts. Burrow’s love for art developed only with her mother’s encouragement of her talents. She explored her passion further and later used it as an escape from the world around her. After graduation Marsica wants to move to Los Angeles to follow her passion for special effects makeup art or to move to Hamilton, Bermuda to apply her graphic design skills for a marketing firm. Marsica’s work focuses mainly on self-realization as a black woman as well as the abstract combination of geometric and organic shapes. She enjoys minimalist art because the simple yet complicated style has always peaked her interest.
The central theme of my work is based off of my relationships with the people around me and my past experiences. Struggles with depression and self hate, which were the results of bad relationships and the mistrust that I’ve had in those around me. Rather than turn that hate into self harm I use that negative energy and turn it into something positive by creating artwork that showed the feelings that I had trapped inside of me. The use of bright high contrast colors, line, and light covers the darker meaning behind my work. You see these elements in the graphic design, printmaking, painting, photoshop, and special effects makeup that I create.
