Sandra was born in Los Angeles, California in 1993. She is of Hispanic heritage, having been born to a mother from Mexico and a father from Guatemala. As a child, her family moved to South Georgia, and after high school she pursued a nursing degree at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. Feeling nursing was not in her future, Barrios decides to follow her passion for the Arts at Valdosta State University where she will graduate with a B.A. in Art and a minor in Psychology in 2017. Sandra will continue her dual interest in Art and Psychology while attending Florida State University to work on her Master’s degree in Art Therapy.
My work consists of photography and oil paintings. My photography captures moments of nature and people I enjoy. By using Black and White processes, I find myself focused on the person, the surroundings and less on the colors. Emotions are more prudent with the absence of color to distract. Through further exploration of techniques, I continued to find value in color photography and search to find the truth in an image. In oil paintings, it allows me to represent true inner emotions within myself and other people I have come across. It was challenging for me to put an idea onto a canvas, but later realized not everything will be perfect. Eventually, the paintings will represent itself to its viewer. These ideas in my works consist of a part of me, of other people, and what I have learned throughout my years here at Valdosta State.
