    Meet Alpha Kappa Alpha!

    July 21, 2021

Get to know the Kappa Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. with questions answered by President April Chappell!

VSU: When was your chapter founded and chartered on the Valdosta State University campus?

AC: The Kappa Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was chartered at Valdosta State College on May 23, 1976.

VSU: What is your chapter’s philanthropy or mission?

AC: Kappa Upsilon works diligently to be of service to all mankind and uphold the standards of Alpha Kappa Alpha through our participation in national initiatives set by the sorority. Our current initiatives focus on education, community awareness on critical health issues impacting women, wealth building, arts enrichment and culture, and enhancing the sorority’s international footprint and global impact. In addition to participating in our national initiatives, we are always searching for ways to engage in activities that positively impact our local community.

VSU: Tell us about your chapter.

AC: Our chapter was founded in the spring of 1976 by fourteen educated, driven, and sophisticated women. Since then, over 400 women of high ethical and scholastic standards have joined the chapter. We willingly dedicate our time and service to upholding the legacy of Alpha Kappa Alpha. We enjoy serving our community and creating lifetime bonds with each other while doing so. Our sisterhood is like no other!

VSU: What made you personally want to join this chapter?

AC: My interest in Alpha Kappa Alpha was piqued before I even came to college. Many of the leaders in my school and community are members of the sorority, and I became inspired watching all of the great things they did. Before becoming a member of the chapter, it wasn’t hard to notice how the ladies of Kappa Upsilon were constantly involved around campus and in the community. Along with admiring the work the chapter did, I always enjoyed the events they hosted on campus.

VSU: Is there anything about your chapter that you are especially proud of?

AC: I take extreme pride in how Kappa Upsilon stands out amongst the other Greek-letter organizations on campus. Every year we are winning awards on campus for different achievements. We were just awarded Greek Chapter of the Year, Council Chapter of the Year, Excellence in Leadership, Excellence in Chapter Programming, Excellence in Academics and Scholarships, and the highest NPHC cumulative GPA, plus more despite being amid a pandemic. Our chapter always strives to come out on top!
