A Curious Chapter in Civil War History

by Maureen Puffer-Rothenberg on February 25, 2010 in Odum Library

Linda Paul’s radio story “Jennie’s Secret” tells of “a woman who posed as a man during the Civil War and went on to live most of her life as a man in the tiny town of Saunemin, Illinois. Over the years the town has been ambivalent about their most famous citizen and is struggling to figure out how to honor the memory of Jennie Hodgers/Albert Cashier.“–transom.org

There’s more on Cashier (and many others, including spies, wartime nurses, and vivandieres) in She Went to the Field: Women Soldiers of the Civil War.

My Last Skirt: the Story of Jennie Hodgers, Union Soldier is a fictionalized account of Jennie/Albert’s early life and military career, written for younger readers (ages 9-12)

Albert-Cashier

We also recommend They Fought Like Demons: Women Soldiers of the American Civil War for a look at women as prisoners and casualties of war, life as a female soldier, and the postwar experience.

Big Books (Oversized Kids' Books)

by Maureen Puffer-Rothenberg on January 20, 2010 in Odum Library

We’re re-labeling our giant kids’ books, so half of them haven’t been placed in the new location yet (3rd floor, behind the LZ books).

If you’re unfamiliar with “big books,” they’re for shared reading with a group of children– the book is large enough so everyone can see both illustrations and text.

If you’re working with children this semester, remember we also have awesome hand puppets available to check out. Ask for them at the Circulation desk.

And please remember to set up a PIN for your library account.  If you need help, ask us (chat here).

PIN added to My GIL Library Account

by Sherrida Crawford on January 14, 2010 in Odum Library

Beginning Friday, January 15th, library users will need a PIN (Personal Identification Number) to logon to their My GIL account.  In an effort to provide more security in accessing your account online, the use of a PIN has been implemented.   Since the user determines the PIN, this helps ensure prevention of unauthorized access to your account.

Visit the My GIL Account PIN FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) for more information.
