Noise alert in the library.

by Laura Wright on April 26, 2010 in Odum Library

You may have noticed the construction noise on the original side of the library. Half of the first floor is undergoing a renovation and this week the construction noise is a lot louder than usual. The louder than usual construction work is unavoidable, but it should be over late next week.

There are still many quiet areas to study in the library. The further you move away from the front stairwell, the less you hear the noise.

Puppets Galore

by Maureen Puffer-Rothenberg on April 23, 2010 in Odum Library

April 24th is the 12th Annual National Day of Puppetry.

We have hand puppets to die for, available to check out from Odum, including many realistic-looking animal puppets from Folkmanis. Ask at the front Circulation Desk if you’d like to see the puppets.

This summer the Port City Puppet Festival, July 15th-18th in Wilmington, NC, will offer a Professional Day for the Teaching Artist & Therapist with presentations by puppeteers, educators and therapists.

Or, this summer you could visit Atlanta’s Center for Puppetry Arts. The Center has many historic puppets on exhibit, and presents unforgettable performances.

Marilyn Monroe Reading

by Maureen Puffer-Rothenberg on April 6, 2010 in Odum Library

Slate.com and Magnum Photos post these wonderful photographs of libraries and people reading, from around the 1940’s to the present.

#13 is a  photo of Marilyn Monroe hanging out at a playground, reading a book, in a bathing suit.

#20 is James Dean reciting James Whitcomb Riley‘s poetry.

Here’s a snapshot of the reading room in the old Valdosta State College Library, when the library was in Powell Hall:

First Floor Renovation

by Laura Wright on March 29, 2010 in Renovation

The first floor, original side, of Odum Library is closed for renovation.

The bound periodicals are still on the first floor, covered with huge sheets of plastic.

Librarians, faculty, students, and staff are not allowed into the construction zone, for safety reasons. If you need a bound periodical, microfiche, or microfilm that is located in the construction zone, you need to fill in a request form…

A designated library employee will retrieve the item for you, as soon as is safely possible.

Request forms are located at the main Circulation Desk and the Reference Desk.

Quirky Southern Fiction

by Maureen Puffer-Rothenberg on March 22, 2010 in Odum Library

Kevin Wilson‘s Tunneling to the Center of the Earth collects eleven short stories including “The Shooting Man”:

It took me damn near a week to convince Sue-Bee to come watch this guy shoot himself in the face. “Why would I wanna do something like that, Guster?” she asked me, which seemed like a dumb question because why does anyone want to do anything? It just seemed like fun, that’s all.

The book includes extras, like “The Stories Behind the Stories,” a little essay from the author, and an interview. He says:

This is how I came to writing . . . I read book after book by authors infinitely more talented than myself and tried to learn from them. The only strange detail was that, as I was writing and reading, I was saying to myself, “Kevin, this is going to get you laid.” It did not. This was for the best.
