Big Books (Oversized Kids' Books)

by Maureen Puffer-Rothenberg on January 20, 2010 in Odum Library

We’re re-labeling our giant kids’ books, so half of them haven’t been placed in the new location yet (3rd floor, behind the LZ books).

If you’re unfamiliar with “big books,” they’re for shared reading with a group of children– the book is large enough so everyone can see both illustrations and text.

If you’re working with children this semester, remember we also have awesome hand puppets available to check out. Ask for them at the Circulation desk.

And please remember to set up a PIN for your library account.  If you need help, ask us (chat here).

PIN added to My GIL Library Account

by Sherrida Crawford on January 14, 2010 in Odum Library

Beginning Friday, January 15th, library users will need a PIN (Personal Identification Number) to logon to their My GIL account.  In an effort to provide more security in accessing your account online, the use of a PIN has been implemented.   Since the user determines the PIN, this helps ensure prevention of unauthorized access to your account.

Visit the My GIL Account PIN FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) for more information.

Paradise Lost

by Maureen Puffer-Rothenberg on January 13, 2010 in Odum Library

From Cambridge University’s Christ’s College– Darkness Visible will help students new to John Milton’s Paradise Lost, with summaries of each book, descriptions of major characters, a gallery of illustrations with interactive features, and much more– tons of stuff.

A dungeon horrible, on all sides round
As one great furnace flamed, yet from those flames
No light, but rather darkness visible
Served only to discover sights of woe . . .

Whitechapel Horrors

by Maureen Puffer-Rothenberg on January 6, 2010 in Odum Library

With the new Sherlock Holmes movie hitting theaters, we’re reminded of the many Holmes stories we have available to check out, including The Whitechapel Horrors (pitting the detective against Saucy Jack).

Read Charles McGrath’s take on the character here in the New York Times.

Literature in a Daily Dose

by Laura Wright on December 17, 2009 in Odum Library

DailyLit.com delivers bite-sized pieces of classic or contemporary books to your email or RSS feed for free each day. You can set the schedule for how often and what time installments are sent, and select from a variety of titles.

I haven’t tried it yet but I’m thinking that Frankenstein or Journey to the Center of the Earth would be fun titles to start with.
