Watch This Epically Unfair Battle Between a $50 Camcorder and a $50K Cinema Camera
This camera comparison video is totally unfair, but it does teach us a little about why expensive cinema cameras cost so damn much.
Usually when you watch cameras battle it out in a comparison video, you’re looking to see which one has the best image quality, color, and dynamic range. However, the team over at Corridor Digital put two contenders in the ring, a $50 Sony Handicam and a $50,000 RED Epic Dragon cinema camera, knowing full well that one would utterly clobber the other, but also knowing that such a drastic difference in image quality could teach us all about why the cost of pro-level cinema cameras is so high.
Okay, the Dragon is better than the Handicam. (Where’s my award for excellence in cinematic journalism?) That’s obvious, but that’s kind of the point of the entire video. It’s not about figuring out which camera performs better, it’s about figuring out where cinema cameras out-perform consumer/prosumer cameras specifically and explaining why they do.

If You’re a Filmmaker, You May Not Like the TSA’s New Airport Screening Protocol
If you’re traveling with camera gear, expect your next trip through airport security to be more time consuming.
Other than long layovers and cancelled flights, going through security is the most annoying thing about being in an airport, and now it’s about to get even more so. The TSA announced Wednesday that they have plans to raise airport security with brand new domestic screening procedures targeting electronic carry-on items.
These stronger security measures will require travelers to place all electronics larger than a cell phone inside bins for X-ray screening. This is the same exact protocol the TSA has enforced for electronics like laptops, but these new screenings will include smaller items such as tablets, handheld game consoles, and yes, even cameras.
TSA Acting Administrator Huban A. Gowadia says in the press release:

FIELD TEST: Trigyn Apex Wireless Performs for Less
As film sets increasingly require wireless video transmission, Trigyn offers an indie friendly solution.
One day we blinked and wireless video became the norm. While big productions have long run wireless video across wide distances, and wireless setups have been a bastion of live production for a while, indie shoots held out, saving money by just running a cheap SDI cable to give the director or client a view of what was being shot.

Watch: This Simple Exercise Will Make You a Better Director
All you have to do is watch a bunch of movies.
There’s no easier way to learn how to make a movie than by watching a bunch of movies. The trick is not to be a passive audience member. As you watch, look to deconstruct the film in as many ways as you possibly can. In breaking down the most minute details (such as editing, framing, types of shots etc.), the intentions behind a director’s choices grow more and more evident.
If we’re trying to learn from the best, then there’s no better entry point than through a combination of The Nerdwriter and Paul Thomas Anderson. in the video below, today’s premiere video essayist takes us through a simple film analyzation exercise that he likes to employ when watching movies. Let’s call it the “Count The Shots Method.”

Amazing Architecture Photography of ICC
Amazing Architecture Photography of ICC
Lars Stieger is a freelance designer and photographer from Hamburg, Germany posting some incredible posts on photography and architecture on his Behance profile. Most of them are about architecture or parts of the urban landscape. The difference is the color treatment applied to the photos and of course the capture itself. The composition is flawless in my opinion. It might look easy to do that, but I challenge you to go out to your downtown area and snap some photos. After doing that you will be able to understand how hard it is to capture images like the ones like the Internationales Congress Centrum Berlin or ICC project that Lars shared.

How ‘Spiderman: Homecoming’ DIT Francesco Sauta Spun a Web With ACES
On-set color workflow keeps changing, and the ‘Spiderman: Homecoming’ team tried the brand new ACES workflow on this summer’s hit edition of the franchise.
After years of using the traditional Rec. 709 HD color space, Spiderman: Homecoming DIT Francesco Sauta and cinematographer Salvatore Totino implemented the ACES color management workflow for the first time on this year’s superhero reboot. The ACES system is designed to help filmmakers manage their color workflow from capture through distribution and help match cameras and formats throughout production. Despite a few small hiccups, on this project it helped the pair maintain color fidelity for the signature red and blue web slinger.
“Even with ACES, you still need to know what you are working with, what the monitoring format will be, and what each camera can do.”
