Watch: Why Do We Keep Finding Ourselves Hooked on ‘Game of Thrones’?

Throughout its six seasons, the fantasy epic has managed to keep us emotionally engaged for a few important reasons.

[Note: GoT season six spoilers ahead.]

Game of Thrones will be kicking off its seventh season this Sunday on HBO, cementing its place as one of the greatest television series of all time. The show has certainly been revolutionary in a number of ways, but when you examine its success, it’s one of the most traditional writing fundamentals that really contributes: Those writers sure know how to craft a scene.

As Robert McKee defines in his classic screenwriting book Story, “A scene is a story in miniature…no matter locations or length, a scene is unified around desire, action, conflict, and change.” In the case of Game of Thrones , a single scene can come to define the plotline for an entire season. Lessons from the Screenplay’s video essay first highlights last season’s reunion of Jon Snow and Sansa Stark as an example.

Watch: The Most Disturbing PG Moments in Movie History

Before there was a PG-13 rating, you might have thought twice before taking your kid to the movies.

For the first 90 years of American cinema, the MPAA had only two ratings: PG and R. This meant that unwitting parents often brought their children to salacious and violently graphic movies. In 1984, the parental outrage came to a fever pitch over two “inappropriate” blockbusters: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Gremlins. Steven Spielberg, perhaps feeling guilty that Jaws was rated PG, finally proposed the idea of an intermediate rating. The PG-13 rating was first attached John Milius’ Red Dawn, released later that year.

A new video from Screen Crush compiles the most traumatic PG-rated moments, including blood, guts, explosions, and horrifying monsters from Time Bandits, Poltergeist, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Planet of the Apes, and more.

Today, the MPAA classifies a PG-13 film as containing the following (as opposed to a PG film):

New Music! SXSW Artist Releases – Friday, July 14

2017 SXSW Showcasing Artist, Sheer Mag – Photo by Alejandro Mendoza

The SXSW Music Festival team is spending these hot summer days going through your Showcase Applications, and we’re enjoying what we’re hearing so far. If you’re interested in being a part of the event, apply to be a Showcasing Artist or enter a PanelPicker session idea.

This week welcomes a nice mix of new artist releases from past SXSW showcasing artists heavy on dreamy rock and electro-pop tones. Ishmael Butler, Left-field hip-hop artist Shabazz Palaces, releases 2 lps to keep fans busy getting their heads around his psychedelic beats. Michelle Zauner’s solo project Japanese Breakfast release Soft Sounds From Another Planet today, a conveniently named album that also functions as a great description for her take on eclectic indie-pop, although she does tend to get a bit noisier than she gives herself credit for. Electronic pop act RAC release the cheeky collaboration-filled electo-pop album EGO as well.

Each week we will pick one of the album releases and make a playlist for those that are enjoying the album but want to discover more similar artists. This week, we’re selecting a indie and garage rock playlist inspired by Sheer Mag, their new album Need To Feel Your Love releases today. Go ahead and give it a listen because these playlists will only be active for one week before we pick a new artist to focus on. Follow us on Spotify to keep up with our playlists each week, and be sure to follow the playlist.

Illustration: Häagen-Dazs Packaging

A cool looking packaging “packed” with illustrations by Andrew Wagner for Häagen-Dazs. In collaboration with a UK-based creative agency called LOVE, they were in charge of the brand design overhaul meanwhile Andrew was in charge of the illustrated pattern to represent each and different flavours. The folks at LOVE invited artists from around the World to collaborate on this project and Andrew was one of the many lucky ones to work on this project, he has to create a pattern that would represent Vanilla Pecan, and Banana & Cream.

Andrew Wagner is a multidisciplinary designer and artist based in San Diego, CA. He has worked with brands like Adobe, Häagen-Dazs and IBM, also serve as an adjunct teacher at the Woodbury University.

Häagen-Dazs has recently embarked on their biggest packaging overhaul in almost 20 years -LOVE, the UK based creative agency behind the new brand design overhaul, wanted to make the packaging an object of desire, and bring to life all Häagen-Dazs’ extraordinary recipe textures, colours and sensations. As part of the design process, LOVE invited 13 artists from across the world, each with a distinct style, to create a unique illustrated pattern for each Haagen-Dazs flavour. From 3D illustrators to flat graphic artists and textile designers, each was paired with the flavours that felt most connected to their work. I had the pleasure of being one of the 13 artists, and the wonderful flavours I was tasked to visually create were Vanilla Pecan, and Banana & Cream!

Eerie 3D Rendering Work by Stuart Lippincott

Eerie 3D Rendering Work by Stuart Lippincott

Stuart Lippincott has been posting some incredible 3D rendering on his Behance profile. They are part of his everyday challenge and as the name suggest, he has been creating one illustration every day. I particular love the style and I can see that it’s becoming more and more a trend. The surreal mood withe small people or just a small person facing a massive object, usually with strong light effects. It reminds me of the 80s, very abstract and sometimes stark, but with this futurist vibe. Anyway check out below some beautiful 3D rendering work.

Stuart is an animator, motion designer and sound designer from Bentonville, Arkansas, USA. As he mentions on his profile, “he is just trying to do things he loves and hope you enjoy his work” – I do enjoy your work Stuart, I love it so much that I will dust off my Cinema 4D and will try to improve my 3D rendering game.

For more information and to check out all images make sure to check out his Behance profile at

Illustration: Cities of America by Jing Zhang

Illustration: Cities of America by Jing Zhang

Let’s have a look at a beautiful series of illustration by Jing Zhang about the maps of America. With the summer season hitting its full speed, this series is quite inspiring of your next road tip this year. Jing Zhang has been inspired since this is her second map projects for when she drove across America back in 2016. She will highlight some of the key architectural locations from each state mixed with beautiful colours and of course gradients!

Jing Zhang is an illustrator based in London, UK; as I quote: “who has love for cities, architecture, food, and technologies.” We’ve seen her work before on ABDZ, you should definitely follow her work on Behance.

I’ve spent four exhilarating months in 2016 visiting the biggest village on earth, the Global Village, travelling eastbound around the world with numerous interesting stops. City has its own colour palette, flavour, sound, and personality. The difference between our culture is what makes our cities so wonderful.
