Design Book: Berlin Design Digest

Design Book: Berlin Design Digest

Berlin Design Digest is a new design book that showcases work from 75 Berlin agencies. Berlin is a creative hot spot. With its remarkable history, its cosmopolitan attitude, and its many interdisciplinary experiments and trends, Berlin is attracting more and more creative-industry movers and shakers and startup founders from across the globe.

To celebrate the ten-year anniversary of UNESCO naming Berlin a ”City of Design,” the editors Robert Eysoldt, a strategic and creative consultant, and Raban Ruddigkeit, a designer and editor, have assembled 100 successful projects, products, and processes by 75 Berlin agencies, design labs, public initiatives, networks, and universities, which currently connect Berlin with the world.

This book juxtaposes innovative experiments and trendsetting initiatives with mega-projects that are relevant to business as well. From architecture to humanitarian design and open source projects, via fashion, product, and communication design. In addition, twelve experts in design and communications offer their thoughts on various design disciplines and processes. including impulses from Anita Tillmann (Premium Group, Berlin), Nikolaus Hafermaas (ArtCenter, Los Angeles), Lars Krückeberg, Wolfram Putz, and Thomas Willemeit (GRAFT, Berlin).

The book with 304 pages and more than 300 photos and illustrations will not only inspire readers, but also enable them to exchange, cooperate, and initiate projects with creatives and designers from Berlin that transcend cultures and nations, and that promote an open society and a free world.

Architecture: Seoul Brutalist Revival

Architecture: Seoul Brutalist Revival

Let’s take a look at this architecture series by photographer Raphael Olivier about the booming scene of the architecture growth in Seoul, Korea. After horrific events that happened about half of a five decades ago, the city has been rebuilding their foundation and structure to offer us a world-class urban design with concrete, shapes and bold angles that made Seoul, the world’s fastest developing city.

Published on Behance is the work from Raphael Olivier. Raphael is a photographer based in Singapore, you should definitely check out his portfolio. It’s filled with a wide range of styles of photography from portrait and case studies.

Seoul, capital of South Korea, has a history of 2000 years but was heavily bombed during the Korean War (1950 – 1953) and mostly left in ruins.

From the 1960’s, the reconstruction of the country, led by former president Park Chung-hee, was marked by rapid economic growth and industrial development. Seoul became a major economic powerhouse and its population grew exponentially, while its urban landscape was shaped by notoriously boring public housing.

However, in the past decade the city has been quickly reinventing itself as a super trendy capital and creative urban center with world-class design and architecture. One of the most noticeable trends in construction is a massive revival of brutalist-style architecture, refined with a modern twist. Whether for residential, commercial, institutional or religious buildings, the use of raw concrete, bold shapes and sharp angles is becoming predominant all around the city. Through a personal study on Neo-Brutalism, this photo essay aims to give a small glimpse onto the booming architectural scene of Seoul, one of the world’s fastest developing city and Asia’s rising stars.

Interaction Design and UI/UX: Caseture Display

Interaction Design and UI/UX: Caseture Display

Let’s take a look at this interaction design project that is quite interesting that involves UI/UX as well. It’s a concept display named: Caseture that uses gesture based interactions in digital experiences. It could a glimpse that what could be a potential experience in the near future, for the “case” being they worked on a concept through how every human action passes through 7 stages. I would definitely advise to watch the videos as well to completely understand the whole experience.

Published on Behance is the work from Eduardo Marzionna who is a senior art director/designer and Luis Uribe who is an art director, they are both based in Germany.

Caseture is a humanscale screen installation that explores the potential of gesture based interactions in digital experiences. Having emotions at the core of its concept, it’s a journey based on the theoretical basis of Donald Norman’s ‘Stages of Action’ – how every human action passes through 7 stages.

Photojournalism: Cinematic Tokyo by Stijn Hoekstra

Photojournalism: Cinematic Tokyo by Stijn Hoekstra

Tokyo Tokyo Tokyo. A city I miss dearly! To remedy to my sadness (hah), let’s take a look at the photojournalism project by Stijn Hoekstra. Named Cinematic Tokyo (the project title says it all), I love his approach from a cinematic perspective considering that is also part of his daytime job which makes it even more perfect with Tokyo as a working environment. It’s such a busy city that Stijn captured moments that makes us feel we are in an actual movie which makes it quite interesting.

Published on Behance is the work from Stijn Hoekstra who is a freelance cinematographer and photographer based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. If you love his style, you should definitely follow his Instagram for more of his work.
