Humanity Through Animation: Director Alexandre Espigares on Netflix’s ‘White Fang’

When developing ‘White Fang’, maintaining the tone of Jack London’s original book was of utmost importance to Alexandre Espigares.

If you’ve ever felt alone, scared, angry, on the defensive, excited, hungry, or in love, then you’ll certainly empathize with the protagonist of the new Netflix film, White Fang, a truly human story about the life—from puppyhood to adulthood—of a wolf-dog.

As we watch White Fang move through the world, we empathize with his struggles as we would with a human, a human, that is, with experience in dogfighting. Featuring voiceovers from Rashida Jones, Nick Offerman, Paul Giamatti and others, the film has a full Alaskan sled-load of excitement, complete with powerful, compassionate writing set against a beautifully visualized backdrop.

No Film School spoke with director Alexandre Espigares about the challenges of making his animated film, now available on Netflix.

No Film School: Can you tell me a little bit about how you achieved the half-drawn, half-photorealistic quality of the film?

‘Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives’ Director Tom McLoughlin on How Comedy Can Produce Great Horror

One of the best entries in the ‘Friday the 13th’ franchise was made by one of its most versatile directors.

The most highly spirited, self-referential, all-around-good-time entry in the lucrative 12-film-deep Friday the 13th slasher franchise, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives is the crème de la crème of the hockey-masked Jason Voorhees’ numerous film acting credits. Released in theaters on August 1st, 1986, the film was heralded as a breath of welcomed fresh air, debuting in the number two slot at the North American box office (behind the prosperous third week of James Cameron’s Aliens).

Written and directed by Tom McLoughlin, a 36-year-old musician, mime, stuntman, and yes, filmmaker, not only did the film do what its title stated it would (resurrecting our machete-wielding maniac), but it also infused hearty laughs and a lighter tone upon the typically dead serious franchise. The expectedly large body count would still be amassed, of course (scroll down to see one of the film’s highlights: the funniest triple decapitation you’ll ever witness), but not without its own touch of irony and grim wit.

Saigon Rainy Days through Illustrations

Saigon Rainy Days through Illustrations

Let’s explore Saigon, Vietnam through illustrations by a bunch of folks including: Maxk Nguyen, Thai Thanh Do, Kawako Giang Nguyễn, Nguyễn Thành Vũ, Thinh Le, Hạnh Huỳnh, Người Đá, Vũ Hải Long and Nguyễn Thành Chiến. This amazing crew has created a tremendous series by illustrating scenes from the streets of Saigon in Vietnam. I loved the visual approach and of course the attention to details for each piece. From eventually the rain, the lighting, the character and going all the way to the reflection of the water on the floor from the rain falling down. Makes everything else magical!

The rainy season in Saigon is truly rainy. It rains from morning to noon, from evening to midnight. Wake up in the rain Saigon’s climate is like a switch, bone-dry is just one flip away from ever-wet. As hurried as the raindrops, thousands of wheels covered in colorful raincoats roll ceaselessly back and forth the city’s drippy face. Somewhere in the heavy pitter-patter, street cries still echo from the tireless feet. They keep walking because in Saigon, the rain will dry for the sun will shine

Meet Kareen Waris aka Waspa: 11-year-old kid with a tremendous drawing talent

Meet Kareen Waris aka Waspa: 11-year-old kid with a tremendous drawing talent

I think the title says it all basically! Meet Kareen Waris who is also known as Waspa that is currently living in Lagos, Nigeria. What is particular is that he is super talented artist and at only age of 11-years-old. Kareen started drawing at the age of 6 and his drawings are generally focused on portraits as we would call it: “hyperrealistic”. If you pay close attention, his drawings almost feel like a photograph. We had to feature his work on ABDZ, and we think he is the youngest artist we have ever featured. That’s very unique and impressive!

2019 Music Tracks: Touring & Live Experience, Making & Marketing Music and More

Blockchain, Cryptocurrencies, and Music session - Photo by Jay Nicholas

The official SXSW user-generated session proposal platform, PanelPicker®, is open for SXSW 2019 through Friday, July 20, and we are eager to hear your great session ideas.

Each year, SXSW uses the PanelPicker platform to crowdsource the ideas that the community is most interested in learning more about in March. These entries become the bedrock of programming for the SXSW Conference. In addition to this, we take the summer months to refine our programming offerings – this year we have consolidated the music portion of the SXSW Conference into three Music Tracks.

2019 Music Tracks

Making & Marketing Music

March 12-16 | The Making & Marketing Music Track inspires attendees to discover what happens when creativity meets technology, and the endless opportunities for artists and professionals to grow their audiences and create the unexpected.

Music Industry & Culture

March 12-16 | As new technologies constantly disrupt industry practices, the Music Industry & Culture track explores music’s rich history to remind us that creativity and innovation are deeply embedded in its DNA.

Touring & Live Experience

March 12-16 | The Touring & Live Experience Track highlights the role venues and festivals, large and small, play in supporting the dynamic touring industry that so many artists increasingly rely on for their livelihoods.

PanelPicker Proposal Information

While the SXSW Conference covers a broad range of topics, there are a few general guidelines that can make any PanelPicker entry a success. Propose forward-thinking ideas – the SXSW community is made of specialists in their respective fields that are excited to learn about the future of their industry. Conference sessions should be succinct enough to thoroughly cover their topic during the time allotment. Be clear and tidy with your proposal – it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle if your reading your proposal is a challenge. Finally, recommend speakers from diverse viewpoints that are highly experienced with the topic of the session.

PanelPicker proposals can be entered in variety of session formats including panels, solo presentations, workshops, and more. Visit the SXSW PanelPicker page for more information.

To get a better picture of what we’re looking for, take a look at some 2018 Music session highlights and explore the range of our programming:

  • Consumer Influence on Music Curation & Experiences (Music Industry & Culture Track) – Music experiences have long been shaped by tastemakers and playlisters seeking to present a defined experience on air, in commercial spaces and in streaming services. Those experiences are increasingly influenced by direct consumer interaction, now expected in an increasingly personalized world. How do we incorporate personalization while still promoting a specific theme or brand? In affording control, have we conceded the intended experience? Danny Turner will discuss this unique challenge.

  • DIY+: A Better Way to Release Music on Your Own (Making & Marketing Music Track) – During this panel, learn about creating success and having options as your business and fan base grows. We will focus on managing and communicating to your fans for fan engagement “best-practices”. We will offer options for distribution and how to make your music available everywhere. We will discuss how to build members of your team properly to replicate what large labels and management firms offer their clients. As your business grows, we will suggest a “check list” for building the right team.

  • Music and the Brain: How Sounds Become Pleasurable (Making & Marketing Music Track) – We bring together experts in the field of neurology, psychology, cognitive science, music performance, and machine learning to explore a question that is fundamental to humanity: what makes music pleasurable? We will discuss recent research that shows how the most complex systems of the brain that are unique to humans integrate with the brain’s emotional and reward systems to create intense emotions and feelings of pleasure to music, and demonstrate these findings through musical performances.
