Dolomites in Infrared by Andrea and Francesco Padovani
Dolomites in Infrared by Andrea and Francesco Padovani
Nine days, more than 110 kilometers of trek and three rolls of Aerochrome film is the equation for this epic gallery of photographs by Andrea and Francesco Padovani, a graphic design duo from Italy. This past summer the pair embarked on a follow up of their photographic project called “Dolomites in Infrared” – an ongoing project they started in 2016 in which they aimed to capture some of the most suggestive landscapes of the Italian Dolomites on delicate infrared film. This kind of film is quite unforgiving, and small changes in the light and the weather can deliver very different results in terms of color and contrast. We’re in awe of the beautiful shots captured and the effort to get each shot makes them that much more special to us. Take a look at the first part of the project here and if you’re interested in limited edition fine art prints you can drop a line here.

Vanita Gupta, Bruce Katz and More Speakers Announced for Cities Summit at SXSW 2018
Announcing the latest round of programming and our official media partnership for the inaugural Cities Summit at SXSW 2018. Read the highlights below and join us March 12-13 at SXSW to reimagine the future of cities.
CityLab Media Partnership
“CityLab is partnering with SXSW for the Cities Summit because our two organizations believe that Austin is one of the places where the future of cities will be formed. It is an opportunity for the next generation of activists, advocates, innovators, and leaders to wrestle with the important challenges of equity, justice, mobility, housing, and community. SXSW has been the genesis for ideas and companies that have changed the world. We feel strongly that in 2018 it will also be the place to redefine what it means to have a smart, equitable and resilient city.” – Rob Bole, General Manager, Citylab
The Cities Summit is centered around three themes:
Cities of Innovation
The Cities Summit program answers questions such as, how can startups overcome regulatory hurdles and help local governments solve problems? What role can biotech play in the cities of the future? And now that cities have opened their data, how do entrepreneurs, designers, and nonprofits actually use it to their benefit? Bruce Katz, the Centennial Scholar of the Brookings Institution, and Jeremy Nowak outline the new power of localism in an age of emerging populism.
Cities for All
Artist and visionary Theaster Gates lays out a plan to redefine the Civic Commons. Futurist James Canton leads a discussion on aging in place, and Duke’s behavior science lab applies their skillsets to urban financial health. Designer Antionette Carroll outlines equitable design in Ferguson, MI, and former DoJ leader Vanita Gupta redefines sanctuary cities. Looking outward, New Story Charity Co-Founder Alexandria Lafci talks building inclusively in emerging markets.
Cities as Narrative
The stories we tell about our cities have dramatic influence over all who live there. Mayor Michael Tubbs of Stockton, CA, shares how amplifying voices of particular residents helped to redesign pathways out of poverty for young people. Writers and journalists Amber Payne, Trymaine Lee, Rebecca Carroll, and Brentin Mock explore how we talk about gentrification. Dave Snowden, founder of the sense-making approach to conflict resolution, leads a master class in how cities can use hidden narratives to drive decision-making.
The Cities Summit is open to all Platinum, Interactive, Film, and Music Badges. To get involved or learn more, contact citiessummit@sxsw.com.
Join Us March 9-18, 2018

Redesigning Apple OS / MacOs 2020 with Edge to Edge Macbook Concept
Redesigning Apple OS / MacOs 2020 with Edge to Edge Macbook Concept
We are taking a look at a very interesting redesign by Montreal-based designer Aurélien Salomon on a concept for Apple OS / MacOs 2020 with Edge to Edge Macbook. First of all, we can’t help to notice the edge to edge MacBook design, what do you think? I am not too keen on the margins but it’s quite interesting though. Aurélien does a remarkable at this presentation and he’s pretty amazing to see his ideas/concepts for the finder, dark mode, Safari and of course Augmented Reality. What do you think of this concept?
Aurélien Salomon is a UI/UX/AR/Motion designer from Montreal, QC, Canada. We love his work on ABDZ, make sure to check his Behance for more.
Apple OS concept redesign ( ux, ui, product, augmented reality, operating system, windows, apple, ios, safari, music, finder, design, motion, animation, 3d). This is a concept that I had in mind for a long time and I am happy to share it with you today. It is an unsolicited visual direction exploration done just for fun. The goal wasn’t to solve every problems and it is by no means stating that it is “better” that what we have now. I learned a lot working on it and it was a lot of fun.

Coca-Cola x Adobe Collaboration by Vasjen Katro
It’s always lovely to see one of your inspirational designers kicking with amazing projects one after another. It is the case with Vasjen Katro and his collaboration work with Coca-Cola x Adobe. Using Adobe Creative Cloud Tools, his task was to simply create awesomeness for the upcoming Tokyo 2020 Olympics inspired by Coca-Cola. The results are stunning and reminding what we mostly used to do 5-6 years ago. Hit it!
Vasjen Katro a visual designer and creative director based in Tirana, Albania. We have featured his work before on ABDZ, it’s always quite inspiring seeing his progress. Check out his work on Behance.

Beautiful Photography with the iPhone by Eric Van Nynatten
Beautiful Photography with the iPhone by Eric Van Nynatten
It’s incredible how technology allowed us to express ourselves and so many different ways. Photography is one of the biggest forms of expression and art that took fully advantage or got mass adoption. The cameras on smartphones are getting better every year and they can already replace the traditional cameras. They say that the best camera is the one you have available when you needed. You always have your phone with you, so there’s your answer. But to give you a bit more context about, check out the beautiful photography examples that Eric Van Nynatten shared on his Behance profile. It’s titled Shots on iPhone, part 1 and 2. As I said, it’s not about the equipment as much as the vision to capture day to day moments and make them memorable or should I dare say, magic.
For this series of photos shot on iPhone, I wanted to push the capabilities of the iPhone and see if I could achieve the same results as my full-frame mirrorless, from shooting in ideal sunlit settings to low-light conditions.
All images were shot on iPhone 6/8 Plus and edited using VSCO & Snapseed apps for iOS.

Web Design & UI/UX: Mindshapes™ Concept
Web Design & UI/UX: Mindshapes™ Concept
It’s an interesting concept that involves web design & UI/UX by Szymon Łucarz for Mindshapes™. It’s an exploration of your mind through our era of technology. The web design is an immerse experience of subtle interactions to explore shall we say the different state of your mind. It’s quite an astonishing design, I wish there was a live app to try. One thing though, we gotta give Szymon for his presentation skills, it’s quite lovely! What do you think?
There isn’t much information about Szymon Łucarz but you still should follow him on Behance.

Video: Meet the GoPro That Survived Being Eaten Alive by Lava
If you ever wanted to know what you would see if you were swallowed by lava, this GoPro survived a lava flow to show you.
Okay, we all know GoPros are tough. We’ve seen them withstand being shot out of canons, dunked in liquid nitrogen, and even launched into space, but what’s the one thing, other than maybe an asteroid the size of Texas, that you’d think a GoPro wouldn’t survive? That’s right: lava, 2000-degree molten rock that can so easily turn your precious lungs and skin into a crispy brick of char in seconds. It sounds appropriate to say a little action camera would be completely obliterated if it ever came into contact with the stuff, but watch how this GoPro gets swallowed up by a lava flow like it ain’t no thang in the video below.

Is ‘Cinderella’ About a Damsel in Distress or a Hellacious Heroine?
What is Disney’s “Cinderella” really about?
Is Cinderella an anti-feminist tale? This is a question that has been asked countless times about the 1950 animated Disney film, as well as virtually every other Disney Princess picture since Snow White, because, unlike their male counterparts, female Disney characters appear to be passive, weak, and unresponsive toward challenges they face, opting instead to wait to be rescued by their Prince Charming.
But this video essay from ScreenPrism argues that critics of the Cinderella may be unwittingly “blaming the victim” for her unmasculine response to familial abuse and neglect.

Watch: 5 Cinematic Slider Moves (and How to Do Them Right)
Here are some ways to use camera sliders to make your footage look more professional and cinematic.
When it comes to camera movement, sliders offer so much versatility and style without having to work very hard to get it. If you want to take your slider game to the next level, Parker Walbeck shows you five super simple camera moves you can do with pretty much any unit on the market, as well as how to avoid common obstacles you might come up against while trying to pull them off. Check out his tutorial below (which starts at around 3:00).
Here are the moves Walbeck talks about in the video:
- Side-to-side
- Push-in/Pull-out
- Parallax
- Low mode
- Aerial
Admittedly, many of these moves are really basic and don’t really require much (if any) guidance for new users. In other words, I doubt anyone buying a camera slider really needs to learn about side-to-side movement, because, hello, that’s what you bought the thing for.
