Roger Deakins Explains His Personal Connection to Cinematography
“It’s experiencing life.”
Though Roger Deakins has yet to ever win an Oscar, he is one of the most highly regarded cinematographers in the world. His talent for telling stories through his beautiful imagery is world-renowned and he’s worked with some of the greatest directors in history, including Martin Scorsese, the Coen Brothers, Frank Darabont, and Denis Villeneuve. ARRI interviewed Deakins for its “The Filmmaker’s View” series to talk about his love for, philosophy on, and approach to cinematography and his responses provide burgeoning DPs everywhere so much to learn from.
Why he loves movies
Deakins is a great lover of films, referring to them in the interview as “old friends” that he has spent his life with. “They pose questions to me,” he says about his love for them in his youth, a love that initially led him to get into painting, graphic design, and photography before he started his career as a documentary cinematographer in the 70s.

‘Thelma’: Eskil Vogt on Why You Should Throw Away Screenwriting Guides to Write Cinematic Movies
Joachim Trier and Eskil Vogt began writing ‘Thelma’ based on set pieces and imagery rather than plot.
Joachim Trier’s Thelma, co-written with longtime collaborator Eskil Vogt, is a departure from their previous work. Respite, Oslo, August 31st, and Louder than Bombs were discursive character studies steeped in naturalism. Thelma, although also character-driven, is a spectacle of a film, featuring grandiose imagery and supernatural powers.
When Thelma (Eili Harboe), a demure college freshman, leaves her strict and religious family to study in Oslo, she begins experiencing violent seizures. The seizures worsen as she finds herself intensely drawn to a classmate, Anja (Kaya Wilkins). Complicating things further is the fact that Thelma, much like Stephen King’s Carrie, discovers she can manipulate the external world with her mind—but just how she can control this force, and whether or not it is benevolent, remains to be seen. Told with careful attention to detail and a chilling slow burn, Thelma is a supernatural coming-of-age story and a meditation on faith and the ruinous nature of desire.

Photography: Exploring Singapore Day & Night
Photography: Exploring Singapore Day & Night
I am slowly gearing up for our next adventure and hopefully we will be heading to Singapore this year or in 2018. One of the best thing I do enjoy before a vacation trip, one of the many things and it’s exploring a city or place through the people who have been there. Especially through photography, I feel that travel vlogs are usually boring (my opinion!) and more about vlogging about themselves than anything else. Let’s explore Singapore through the lenses of Thailand-based photographer Peeradon Ariyanukooltorn and his style is exactly the reflection of what I would be taking from cityscape, scenery, abstract architecture and even stride by shots.
Peeradon Ariyanukooltorn is a freelance photographer from Nonthaburi, Thailand. I would highly suggest for you guys to follow his work on Behance. It’s filled with quality projects, he definitely needs more followers. Let’s get on it!

Brand Identity & UI/UX: Behance Studio Desktop App Concept
Brand Identity & UI/UX: Behance Studio Desktop App Concept
We would like to share this brand identity that involves also UI/UX for a desktop app concept based on the very popular design platform to showcase and discover creative work. Introducing the Behance Studio by Moe Slah. It’s a take on the desktop user experience from creating your project and uploading it all to Behance. It’s a pretty simple flow but one thing I had in mind is how the sync will work compared to what’s already online. Can you still surf on Behance?! What do you guys think, let’s dive in first.
Moe Slah is a Egypt-based digital creative director. We have featured his work before on ABDZ. Make sure to check out his Behance for more of his delightful portfolio and concepts.
