Introducing the 2017 Selection of the Unsplash Awards
Introducing the 2017 Selection of the Unsplash Awards
Let us introduce the 2017 Selection of the Unsplash Awards, a celebration for everyone who openly shares their photography to the community. With over 50K submissions, it must have been such a colossal task to select the 13 categories. It’s very inspiring to go through the collection. It seems like every single one of them, tells a different story. Let’s sit back and enjoy the Unsplash celebration!
In their words
We created 13 categories and selected a photo for each. In less than a month, over 50,000 photos were submitted. We were blown away. There were so many awe-inspiring photos it was nearly impossible to select just one photo for each category.
Congratulations to all the selected photographers and to everyone who made time to submit a photo. It was an honor seeing every shot submitted. We were glued to our screens for hours, teleported into another world where only great artistry can take you.
The Unsplash Awards was created to recognize the powerful impact Unsplash contributors have made through their generosity and artistry. We’ve created 13 photography categories to feature their work.

Eerie Illustration Work for A Separate Reality
Eerie Illustration Work for A Separate Reality
We have featured Alex Andreyev and his amazing and surrealist work so many times here on Abduzeedo. It’s pretty easy to keep featuring him, he is always delivering some incredible illustration work. What I love the most is just how introspective this artworks make me feel. The title of the series explain that quite well, A Separate Reality, 17th edition. Looks like we are 16 posts behind but that’s okay, check out the illustration set after the break and let us know what you think via Twitter and Facebook.
It sounds paradoxical but digital art attracts me because it is free of technological influence. While in traditional arts technologies dramatically limit the artist – his ability to stylize works in graphics or extremely time consuming process of paint drying, in digital painting I sit in front of a screen, grab the stylus and see the result immediately. – Alexey Andreev
Alexey Andreev is a Russian artist based Saint-Petersburg. We highly recommend that you check out his work at http://alexandreev.com/index.html

What Are Horror Master John Carpenter’s Favorite Films?
Though director John Carpenter might enjoy making horror flicks, his cinematic diet surprisingly doesn’t have as much blood and guts.
John Carpenter has spent his career scaring the bejeezus out of movie-goers, and since it’s almost Halloween, it seems right to talk about the films that inspired him to make films that helped contribute to one of the most beloved horror subgenres in cinema. In the video below, Fandor has put together a list of the director’s favorite films, but interestingly enough, you’re not going to see a whole lot of blood, butcher’s knives, or Captain Kirk death masks in the films that shaped Carpenter as a filmmaker. However, that doesn’t mean the films on his list aren’t dark and twisted, as you’ll soon see.

Watch: Why Pennywise is Such a Scary Horror Villain
This classic scientific concept can help us create terrifying villains.
Why exactly is Pennywise from It so terrifying? It may be as much due to a theory from robotic science as it is a factor of great cinematic storytelling. Before we begin, it should be noted that, in the words of video essayist Karsten Runquist, while “technically Pennywise is an undefined morphable character….for the most part he’s a clown.”
Clowns are currently all over pop culture, for instance appearing in the current season of American Horror Story. And, morphable though It might be, Pennywise the Clown is the main attraction in the story. This video looks at the roots of Pennywise’s effectiveness of as a horror villain by examining, among other things, the concept of the Uncanny Valley, as well as his status as a modern-day troll (not the internet kind, though.)
