Announcing 200+ Showcasing Artists for the 2018 SXSW Music Festival

And we’re back! SXSW 2018 is five months away, and today’s announcement reveals the first wave of over 200 Showcasing Artists who will be performing at the SXSW Music Festival, March 12–18, 2018. Discovery is the standard at SXSW, and with acts from 32 countries set to perform in an array of musical styles you can expect to find artists and genres that you don’t even know you love yet.

Showcasing Artists include 88Rising artists Higher Brothers from Chengdu, China and Indonesian rapper Rich Chigga, new Matador Records signee Snail Mail, and recent additions to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, Jay Park and Farina. Moses Boyd returns with the jazz/grime/electronic-infused Moses Boyd – Solo X one-man performance, while Albert Hammond Jr-produced Japanese indie-rockers DYGL, UK and New Zealand singer/songwriters Lucy Rose and Marlon Williams, and iconic UK indie pop legends The Wedding Present also join the 2018 lineup. View the full list of Showcasing Artists below.

Digging into a list of this magnitude is always a treat, but can also be time-consuming. Allow us to lend you a helping hand in the process of discovery:

In case you missed it, the SXSW Conference made a Keynote & Featured Speakers Announcement yesterday, including additions to the Music Tracks. Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Keith Urban will speak at the conference as part of Music Culture & Stories, and Spotify’s Chief Content Officer Stefan Blom will have a conversation with Josh Constine, the Editor-At-Large for TechCrunch, in Sync, Stream & License.

Lock in your spot in the audience for these performances and conference sessions by registering to attend. Act quickly, as registering before the October 20 deadline will save you 30% on a Music Badge. The Music Badge provides primary access to all showcases, Music and Convergence tracks at the SXSW Conference and more, plus secondary access to Interactive and Film content. Review this chart to learn more about what the Music Badge can do for you.

Artists, if this announcement has served as a reminder that you have not yet submitted your Showcase Application, don’t panic. There’s still time to apply before the final deadline on October 20. Read these tips from the Music Festival team for a primer on how to make your best effort in the application process, and watch this helpful How-To video if you need help with the nuts and bolts.

Watercolor artworks that are too good to be true

Watercolor artworks that are too good to be true

It’s just mind blowing to find artworks so beautiful that you might think it was done digitally. It tends to be very tricky to find amazingly done watercolor pieces, but for Russian artist Ashiya it’s no problem at all. She paints artworks that are too good to be true.

Here you can see some of her latest pieces. For more of it and for videos of her creative process, please check out her Instagram account! You should really follow her keep yourself updated. I hope you enjoy these! Cheers. 😉

Nightscape Photography Series: Ultraviolet Break of Day

Nightscape Photography Series: Ultraviolet Break of Day

Did you get a chance to watch Blade Runner 2049 this Weekend? I still haven’t, sadly. With this movie release, many of us have been re-exploring that movie genre but for us on ABDZ; it’s photography! We are taking a look at this nightscape photography series by FIELD IO, where are we headed this time? In the streets of Shenzhen’s Huaqiangbei also known as “The World’s Greatest Electronics Market where after some exploration on Adobe Lightroom, Marcus decided to create a series based on that uncanny atmosphere popularly inspired in the original Blade Runner movie.

FIELD IO is the work of Marcus Wendt who is a designer and visual artist from London, UK. You should definitely check out his Behance for more of his work.

Plunged into a foreign dark I found a new way of seeing, strange and alien. Synthetic light creeps into my eyes, the air thick with colours shifting and angles unbending. In the midst of the night a new day begins.

Mobile Photography: First unedited images taken with the Pixel 2

Mobile Photography: First unedited images taken with the Pixel 2

Over the long Weekend, Google has released a bunch of photos that were taken with their latest Pixel 2. It looks quite stunning and they are unedited! From the announcement, I was a bit disappointed that the camera didn’t change since the original Pixel. But my feedback is quite redeeming itself with what they are promising and what they called: “computational photography”. Equipped with a single 12MP camera with a f/1.8 aperture and 1.4μm pixels; the Pixel 2 (judging by this collection) is also moving ahead with their portrait mode feature that looks quite beautiful as well. All that jazz to be saying that I am very excited about what’s to come with the Pixel 2, I can’t wait to test it out in the wild. What do you think about these pictures?

Taking great photos and videos is one of the things you do most with your phone, so we set out to deliver the best photography experience. You get stunningly crisp, clear, and detailed photos in any light. You can also take high-quality portrait shots with the perfect background blurs, from both the front and back camera. New motion photos capture a few seconds of video around the shot so you can relive the moment around the picture. The Pixel 2 camera is powered by our computational photography and machine learning (ML) capabilities which make all these great features easy, fun and fast for you to use.

Web Design & UI/UX: Lionsgate Pitch Concept

Web Design & UI/UX: Lionsgate Pitch Concept

I used to be a great fan (and still) of pitch concepts, it’s such a great exercise to do with your team or even with yourself. The goal is to attract a client for project by getting out of your comfort zone with an idea and going through the whole design process. I love it because you get to experiment ideas or even try concepts that you wish you could have done on another project. We are taking a closer look at the work from Rolf Jensen for a pitch he had to work on for Lionsgate (in collaboration with Real Pie Media), I love how the background colour is part of the UI where buttons aren’t adding an additional foreground colour. It almost feels like an app but through a web experience. Check it out!

Rolf Jensen is a freelance interactive director based in Lower East Side, New York. We have featured his work before on ABDZ, please check him out on Behance.

These visuals are pulled from a design pitch I created for Lionsgate and Real Pie Media in LA a while back, yet this is some of the most recent work that I was able to show publicly this year, but more to be shared soon.

3 Ways David Fincher Uses Color to Completely Mess with Your Head

The color palettes David Fincher uses in his films are just as powerful as his dark, unstable characters.

There are a lot of words to describe David Fincher’s films but “subtle” isn’t really one of them. The worlds he creates have a characteristic normalcy, albeit dark and slightly off, but as their stories progress we’re always brought to the nightmarish carnival that is Fincher’s creativity—peeking past the curtain to see a fight club, a missing woman stabbing a man to death mid-coitus, and a mummified man barely alive laying in a room full of pine tree air fresheners.

However, there are areas in which Fincher uses some restraint and finesse in order to carefully lay the groundwork for his more over-the-top sequences, one of which is color. In this video essay by StudioBinder, we get to see how the director employs different color palettes to communicate important themes and character traits to his audience, as well as to ramp up the anticipation in suspenseful scenes.

What Dan Harmon’s Improvised Cartoon Can Teach You about Instinctual Storytelling

“You are a storyteller. You were born that way.” —Dan Harmon

Does storytelling come naturally to you? That’s kind of a tricky question, right? On one hand, we can pretty capably tell a co-worker about our crazy weekend, but on the other hand, we can spend hours staring at a blank page, completely stuck on how to write our next scene. Really, while storytelling might be an inherent skill we’re all born with, the ability to put that skill to work on paper may not be.

However, one writer that seems to really have this screenwriting thing down is Dan Harmon. His work on Community, Rick and Morty, and countless other TV series has shown us that consistent quality is attainable, but one show, in particular, reveals a unique spirit of storytelling that relies less on talent and labor and more on creative instinct, the improvised D&D knock-off HarmonQuest. In this video essay, Sage Hyden of Just Write discusses what screenwriters can learn about storytelling from improv, practice, and going with your gut.
