Abstracts Open: 2020 CUR Biennial Conference, Purdue

At the 2020 CUR Biennial Conference at Purdue University on June 27-30, 2020, faculty, administrators, staff, academic and community partners, and policymakers will share models of undergraduate research activities from a wide variety of settings and disciplines, organized by the following themes:

• Assessment in Undergraduate Research

• Diversity and Inclusion in Undergraduate Research

• Integrating and Building Undergraduate Research into Curriculum and Coursework

• New Models and Settings for Undergraduate Research

Abstracts may be submitted for oral and poster presentations until Nov 22, 2019. In addition, submissions are welcomed that fall outside a specific theme, including those with nontraditional presentation formats (e.g., performances).

CUR Biology Division Offers Student Travel Grants

CUR’s Biology Division is offering a limited number of travel grants (up to $250 each) for undergraduates presenting original, biological research results at a regional or national, discipline-specific meeting. Application deadlines: Oct 15, 2019, and Jan 13, 2020.

Creative Inquiry in the Arts & Humanities

The 2019 Creative Inquiry in the Arts & Humanities Institute will be held Nov 8-10, 2019, at Trinity University in San Antonio, TX. Teams of faculty and administrators are invited to apply for the institute, which will feature the development of action plans to advance A&H undergraduate research on campus with custom-designed goals and strategies. Expert facilitators will assist the teams with issues such as funding, undergraduate research models, sample programs, workload, curriculum, recruitment, and promotion.

Oct 6 Deadline to Apply for CUR Institute: Initiating and Sustaining Undergraduate Research Programs

This institute, which will be hosted by Miami University in Oxford, OH, on Nov 15-17, 2019, is designed for campuses that are establishing undergraduate research programs or centralized undergraduate research offices and those expanding undergraduate research opportunities from a single department to a campus-wide program. It is also valuable for campuses addressing service to new student constituencies (such as underrepresented students). 

Mathematician's Practical Guide to UR

NEW! A Mathematician’s Practical Guide to Mentoring UR

A Mathematician’s Practical Guide to Mentoring Undergraduate Research provides how-to’s on starting and nurturing an undergraduate research program in mathematical sciences. The book by Michael Dorff, Allison Henrich, and Lara Pudwell is published by the American Mathematical Society / Mathematical Association of America with the cooperation of CUR. A special price is offered for CUR members in the CUR Bookstore. 

Nominations Due Nov 15 for CUR Leadership Positions

CUR is able to fulfill its mission because of its volunteers! Are you passionate about undergraduate research? Would you like to deepen your involvement? The deadline for self-nominations for the positions of councilor, president-elect, and council representative to the CUR Executive Board is November 15, 2019. 

Submit Nominations by Nov 22 for CUR-Goldwater Scholars Faculty Mentor Award

CUR and the Goldwater Scholars program invite nominations for the CUR-Goldwater Scholars Faculty Mentor Award, which recognizes faculty mentors of Goldwater Scholars who conduct their research in a STEM discipline. The nomination deadline is Nov 22, 2019.

Register for 2020 CUR Dialogues

At , faculty and administrators interact with federal agency program officers and other grant funders and take part in several networking opportunities. CUR Dialogues 2020 will take place at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, VA, on Feb 13-16, 2020, and will focus on the theme “Getting on the Right Path: Networks, Relationships, and Uncovering Grant Opportunities.” Take advantage of the early-bird registration rate until Dec 12, 2019. Some conference grants will be available. 

New Online CUR Community: Student Journals

Inspired by a proposal from IU Bloomington fourth-year student Shahin Saberi, the new  community in the online CUR Community offers a place for those involved in student research journals—students, faculty, librarians, administrators, and others—to share resources, foster discussion of best practices, seek solutions to issues encountered in the operation of student journals, and provide support and networking to such individuals.

How to Join. To join the  community, login using your CUR credentials. Those who are logging in for the first time or have forgotten their password should use the “” link. If accessing the CUR Community for the first time, be sure to accept the Terms and Conditions. Then, use the green “Join Community” button on the right side of the screen to select notification preferences and officially join the discussion.
