Dr. José A. Vélez and Dr. Shaun V. Ault were recently awarded a National Science Foundation grant for their proposal “CBMS Conference on Topological Data Analysis and Persistence Theory.” Addressing today’s rapid growth of complex and cumbersome data analysis, the goal of organizing this conference is to provide an introduction to topological data analysis and persistence theory to a broader audience. They are also aiming to attract students both at the undergraduate and graduate level as well as researchers from different fields not limited to that of pure or applied mathematics. They are specially interested in attracting students from underrepresented backgrounds such as African American and Latino students and provide the opportunity of such students to learn about the available options for pursuing studies in graduate school, and to interact with graduate students and faculty from research institutions.

Dr. José A. Vélez has a Ph.D in Mathematics from the University of Iowa. He is a VSU Professor of Mathematics and has been employed by VSU since 2010. His research interests include representation theory of algebras and deformation theory of modules.

Dr. Shaun V. Ault, VSU Mathematics Department Head and Associate Professor of Mathematics has a Ph.D. in Mathematics from The Ohio State University. His research interests include algebraic topology, enumerative combinatorics, and computational mathematics.
