60 Years of the National Book Awards

by Maureen Puffer-Rothenberg on July 9, 2009 in Odum Library

The National Book Foundation is blogging one National Book Award winner each day until September 21st.

First up is the 1950 winner, Nelson Algren’s The Man with the Golden Arm, the tale of Chicago morphine junkie and stud-poker dealer Frankie Machine.

We have a copy at PS3501 .L4625 M3 1949.

"Never play cards with any man named 'Doc.' Never eat at any place called 'Mom's.' And never, never, no matter what else you do in your whole life, never sleep with anyone whose troubles are worse than your own."
