Watch: Dave Bautista Has Something to Hide in New ‘Blade Runner 2049’ Prequel Short

Don’t let the glasses fool you. Dave Bautista is one bad mother…

We’re three weeks away from the return of dystopian Los Angeles where Atari still looms large and replicants may be on the loose in Blade Runner 2049. To bridge the gap between the original Ridley Scott film and the sequel which takes place 30 years later, Warner Bros. is releasing three prequel short films directed by Luke Scott, Ridley’s son.

The second installment, 2048: Nowhere to Run, brings us up almost to the current film, introducing Sapper Morton (played by Dave Bautista), a worm farmer with something to hide. While this short was released earlier this week, the HD version had a messed up frame rate, making the viewing experience less than appealing. Warner Bros. has finally released the short on its YouTube channel in HD with the proper frame rate. You can check out the film below.

In case you missed the first prequel short, 2036: Nexus Dawn, you can catch up below to learn about the next generation of replicants.

7 Things You Wish You Knew Before Directing Your First Feature

Though your first film may not be your best film, it could quite possibly be your best teacher.

You’re going to make mistakes on every film you make, but your first project is unique in that you’re probably making all of them within the same project. Those who have already experienced it know the struggle all too well. But learning about the countless errors other directors have made in their first films can help you avoid the ones you could make on your own, which is why you should definitely check out this video from Film Riot. In it, host Ryan Connolly talks with Dan Trachtenberg about his experience directing his first feature 10 Cloverfield Lane to learn about how the many mistakes he made actually helped him become a better filmmaker.

Exploring ‘The Most Dangerous, Exciting, Edgy Place’ With the Brilliant Jane Campion

We could listen this filmmaking icon talk forever.

Jane Campion has never had a retrospective. Jane Campion, arguably the most successful female director—the only woman in possession of a Palme d’Or, the second of four female Oscar-winning directors, and the creator of one of the most popular indie films of all time—has never had a retrospective. Until now.

In honor of the premiere of Top of the Lake: China Girl, the second season in Campion’s award-winning detective drama, The Film Society of Lincoln Center is running a week-long exhibition of Campion’s full career. It ends this Sunday. The retrospective features every single one of Campion’s films on 35mm, as well as some of her shorts on 16 and Super 8.

The event kicked off with “An Evening With Jane Campion,” where the director unpacked her career with moderator Dennis Lim. Together they discussed Campion’s writing techniques, her fandom for David Lynch, how she took ecstasy with the Brontës, and how she’s been a stalwart of feminism for the span of her 35 years in the film industry. Read the best moments from the night below.

The Fifth Annual SXSW HAAM Benefit Day Show

Tuesday, September 12, 2017, marked the fifth annual SXSW HAAM Benefit Day Show in participation with many other events hosted throughout Austin. Beyond being an opportunity to enjoy good music and food with friends, the event raises money for the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians, an organization that provides Austin’s working musicians with access to healthcare services with an emphasis on prevention and wellness.

This year’s event was held at The Austin Beer Garden Brewing Co. (The ABGB) and included performances from Austin-based artists She Sir, Julian Acosta, and Bidi Bidi Banda. She Sir kicked off the event with a dreamy shoe-gaze set, followed by a intimate performance by singer-songwriter Julian Acosta. Local Selena tribute band Bidi Bidi Banda closed out the night on a high note.

Thanks to everyone involved in HAAM Benefit Day and the large participation from the Austin community. If you were unable to attend the event but are interested in donating to HAAM, you can make a donation at any time at myhaam.org/donate. You can also check out the SXSWfm® HAAM Benefit Day radio show to hear music from the artists who performed.
