Roger Deakins Explains His Personal Connection to Cinematography
“It’s experiencing life.”
Though Roger Deakins has yet to ever win an Oscar, he is one of the most highly regarded cinematographers in the world. His talent for telling stories through his beautiful imagery is world-renowned and he’s worked with some of the greatest directors in history, including Martin Scorsese, the Coen Brothers, Frank Darabont, and Denis Villeneuve. ARRI interviewed Deakins for its “The Filmmaker’s View” series to talk about his love for, philosophy on, and approach to cinematography and his responses provide burgeoning DPs everywhere so much to learn from.
Why he loves movies
Deakins is a great lover of films, referring to them in the interview as “old friends” that he has spent his life with. “They pose questions to me,” he says about his love for them in his youth, a love that initially led him to get into painting, graphic design, and photography before he started his career as a documentary cinematographer in the 70s.

‘Thelma’: Eskil Vogt on Why You Should Throw Away Screenwriting Guides to Write Cinematic Movies
Joachim Trier and Eskil Vogt began writing ‘Thelma’ based on set pieces and imagery rather than plot.
Joachim Trier’s Thelma, co-written with longtime collaborator Eskil Vogt, is a departure from their previous work. Respite, Oslo, August 31st, and Louder than Bombs were discursive character studies steeped in naturalism. Thelma, although also character-driven, is a spectacle of a film, featuring grandiose imagery and supernatural powers.
When Thelma (Eili Harboe), a demure college freshman, leaves her strict and religious family to study in Oslo, she begins experiencing violent seizures. The seizures worsen as she finds herself intensely drawn to a classmate, Anja (Kaya Wilkins). Complicating things further is the fact that Thelma, much like Stephen King’s Carrie, discovers she can manipulate the external world with her mind—but just how she can control this force, and whether or not it is benevolent, remains to be seen. Told with careful attention to detail and a chilling slow burn, Thelma is a supernatural coming-of-age story and a meditation on faith and the ruinous nature of desire.

25 Years of SXSW Film Festival – Gareth Edwards
To commemorate the 25th edition of the SXSW Film Festival, we will spotlight careers launched, artists discovered, powerful performances, and more from our alumni. This week’s featured artist is director and writer Gareth Edwards.
Edward’s directorial film debut, Monsters, world premiered at the 2010 SXSW Film Festival. Monsters won many accolades, garnering six nominations and three wins, including Best Director for Edwards at the British Independent Film Awards. Edwards was also nominated for a BAFTA award for Outstanding Debut by a British Director. The film was listed as one of the top ten independent films of 2010 by the National Board of Review and placed third on Moviefone’s Top 10 Sci-Fi Movies that same year. In anticipation of Edward’s second feature, the 2014 reboot of Godzilla for Warner Brothers, he presented a 60th anniversary screening of the 1954 original at SXSW. Audience members were treated to an exclusive first look of the remake.
As director of the exhilarating Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, a chapter in the Star Wars Anthology series, Edwards returned to SXSW as a 2017 Film Keynote Speaker, where he discussed his career and his desire to join the rebel alliance after his first experience watching Star Wars. Rogue One was the second highest-grossing film of 2016 and went on to receive two Oscar nominations for sound mixing and visual effects.
We are excited to share his #SXSWFilm25 story with you.
“You can divide my life in two, before SXSW and after SXSW. It scares me to think how different my career would be if my first film hadn’t been premiered at the festival. I can pretty much trace all my success since then back to that moment… But please don’t tell them this or they’ll sue me for a share of my Hollywood residuals.”
Stay tuned to SXSW News each week for more 25th edition stories.
