Julia Cheek on The Creative Fix with SXSW [Video]

On the premiere episode of The Creative Fix, SXSW Conference Programmer Dhinuka Perera sat down for a chat with 2018 SXSW Speaker and entrepreneur Julia Cheek.

As the founder of EverlyWell, Cheek came up with a creative fix for one of the most common inconveniences facing patients in the healthcare industry: lab tests. After experiencing the complicated nature of conventional lab testing, Cheek took it upon herself to examine the business behind labs and solve the problems the industry either couldn’t or wouldn’t. By focusing her startup on offering lab testing directly to consumers, no doctor or hospital visit required, she has disrupted the healthcare space.

Her unique approach hasn’t gone unnoticed either. Her startup EverlyWell was recently featured on ABC’s Shark Tank, where Shark Lori Griner took a chance on Cheek by offering her the largest investment for a solo female entrepreneur in the entire show’s history.

Rock and Roll Out the New Look

Among the unique things to appreciate about the SXSW Conference & Festivals is the Bud Light exclusive packaging design. This year, Bud Light commissioned well-known local street artists and longtime friends, Zuzu and Mouf, to create its aluminum bottles.

They worked collaboratively to design custom SXSW packaging that not only represents Austin itself, but is also reminiscent of their memories and moments as locals of Austin. Luckily for you, the unique South By-inspired bottles can already be found on shelves around the city.

Bud Light also took over ACL Live on Monday for their 2018 SXSW Packaging Launch Party. This lively event featured plenty of refreshing Bud Light for all the brand’s friends and guests, who also munched on brisket and ribs from a local BBQ joint. Following the much-anticipated reveal of the SXSW packaging, the up-and-coming local artist Eric Tessmer stole the show with an authentic, raw live performance for all in attendance. The entire event was a smashing success, even by SXSW standards.

A commercial version of HoloLens is available to rent in the U.S. and Canada

Microsoft said on Tuesday that companies can now rent the Commercial Suite version HoloLens through Abcomrents. This will enable corporations to determine if HoloLens is right for their needs.

Smart Cities, Superheroes, and Placemaking: Cities Summit Sessions at SXSW 2018

The inaugural Cities Summit at SXSW brings together civic leaders, creative citizens, and urbanists for two days of dynamic programming, performances, pop-up exhibits, and events exploring the future of our cities. Learn more about what the 2018 Cities Summit has to offer.

“There often seems to be two sides to the cities of the future conversation, one is the ‘smart cities’ arm, focused on innovation and technology as the key to enhancing cities, the other is the ‘human-centered’ arm, highlighting placemaking, arts and culture as keys to successful urban life,” says SXSW Cities Summit Programmer Julie Yost. “The Cities Summit lies in a unique position, as we bridge these communities at SXSW, and our program is emblematic of this. Choreographing the City: Policy through Performance

Speakers: Michele Martell (Martell Media House), Krissie Marty (Forklift Danceworks), Laura Morrison, and Paul Slutes (Austin City Government)

For 16 years, Forklift Danceworks has utilized the creative process of co-choreographed performances with city workers and communities to tackle city planning issues. Their latest 3-year Pools Project uses dance to engage historically disenfranchised communities on the East Side of Austin as the City crafts a new master plan to address its aging aquatic infrastructure. Forklift embodies creative placemaking to harness the power of narratives to transform communities, attitudes and behaviors.

The Experimentalists: Cities, Political Imagination & Social Creativity

Speakers: Gabriella Gomez-Mont (Laboratorio para la Ciudad)

Five years ago Gabriella Gómez-Mont had a tremendously provocative offer from the newly elected Mayor of Mexico City: to invent a new type of city department from scratch. Shape-shifting and experimental, specializing in the gaps and tensions between things; civics, politics and humanities in continuous conversation.

City Everywhere: A Storytelling Tour Through the Landscapes of Technology

Our luminous technologies cast shadows that stretch across the planet. This panel brings together urban journalists (and comic-book fans) with celebrated comic-book authors, who will look at how once-gritty cities of comic-book lore look more and more like futuristic Metropolis—and how those changes are reflected in comic books and films.

Winter Sport Character Design by Dora Vincze

We are delighted to share a timely post today by Hungarian-based illustrator Dora Vincze showcasing some fun illustrations celebrating winter sports. Just in time for the Olympics in South Korea, these whimsical, animated character illustrations have us beaming from ear to ear. The Winter Olympics began in 1924 in Chamonix, France as a major international affair and continued to take place every four years. Having evolved since their inception, sports and disciplines have been added and subtracted over time. The sports Vincze features here such as Alpine skiing and snowboarding have earned a permanent spot on the Olympic programme. For this work Vincze has employed Photoshop and After Effects to achieve the cheery end result. We don’t have much further detail to wax poetic on this talented young illustrator but you can check her Instagram for more discovery and inspiration.

Incredible Illustration for Marvel Black Panther by Billelis …

Billelis … shared another amazing post on his Behance profile. This time it’s an digital art and illustration work he has done for the upcoming Marvel movie, Black Panther. As expected, it’s an incredibly detailed artwork with intricate forms and shapes. It’s hard to describe his work, it looks like a mandala, or sometimes the Iron Throne from the Game of Thrones. It doesn’t matter the way you try to explain, it is something that you have to see it. Below I added a few images.

Had the pleasure of working with the very talented BossLogic on this artist initiated key visual for Marvel and Marvel Studio’s upcoming film – Black Panther.

Web Design 2018 Trends – Part 1

The cool thing about following websites like Dribbble and Behance, especially Dribbble, is that you can see the direction the visual design community is going. For the past 10 years we have seen photo-realistic icons being the main theme, then it evolved to lettering, vector illustration and for the past couple of years the site has definitely focused on UI/UX. Web design is part of that and I have been collecting images for posts to illustrate a new trend in web design. Below you can see what I am talking about. To summarize, it’s highly editorial, simple and in my opinion looks amazing. The only question I have is how does that work with fully responsive websites. The more complex the layout is hight the number of edge cases you will have. At least from my short experience.
