Watch: Kenneth Lonergan Reveals the Emotional Journey of Storytelling

Every moment of the storytelling process is filled with emotion.

If you’re a fan of Kenneth Lonergan’s films and plays, you know that he tells stories with characters wrestling with their deepest emotions, many times struggling with very real existential crises. And yet, Lonergan also has a wonderful sense of humor that he laces throughout these emotional tales.

The Oscar-winning screenwriter of Manchester by the Sea and much lauded playwright recently gave a very interesting talk for the BAFTA Screenwriters Lecture series, where he works through his personal experiences and describes how they relate to his writing and directing. Check out the lecture below, and if you don’t have time for the full talk, you can read our takeaways after the video.

Stir Up Innovative Ideas with Catalyst Product Design and Development

Catalyst Logo blog

Catalyst Product Design and Development will provide delicious complimentary coffee at their SXSW Trade Show booth this week and share their new design methodology.

In recent years, design thinking has become a widely accepted and endorsed tool, utilized by not only designers but business strategists and key decision makers alike. While wildly popular, and valid in producing good, safe, ideas, there are some limitations.

How do you take into account the constant evolution of technology and the ever changing market place as you approach new design ideas, if you only consider the realities of the world today?

Catalyst believes that the concepts behind design thinking and user/human-centered design are valid; however, they also believe these products and solutions do not produce the highest creative potential nor do they consider the constraints of the current and future reality.

What if there was a way you could have it all, the immersive understanding, the data from users, and the creative forward thinking?

Stop by booth 943 at the Trade Show for your caffeine fix and learn more about how Catalyst can help you have it all.

Interactive Keynote Jennifer Doudna at the 2017 SXSW Conference [Video]

“What if a cell’s DNA could be edited just like the text of a document so that you could actually erase letters, you could erase whole sentences, [you could] replace sentences, and you could do things that would enable scientists to change the mutations that might cause genetic disease, make changes that allow us to understand the function of DNA and different kinds of organisms and perhaps, enable us to really direct the way that organisms are evolving on the planet?”

Named one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in 2015, Jennifer Doudna, Ph.D. is a professor of molecular and cell biology and chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, where she holds the Li Ka Shing Chancellor’s Chair in Biomedical and Health Sciences and is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator. Hotel Rooms Become Live Music Venues with Room Service Show

Room Service SXSW

In Austin to shoot their third season during the SXSW Music Festival, Room Service is a short-format digital series distributed on Vevo and YouTube that captures intimate musical performances in hotel rooms.

But how does a hotel room work as a performance space? Room Service’s quick production times enables them to shoot two live acoustic performances and an exclusive interview, all from inside a musician’s hotel room. The interviews are short and sweet; the performances, unique to the setting, provide an original, mastered track for each artist.

Featuring both up-and-coming artists and established talent, Room Service creates compelling stories for a diverse audience, easily shareable on social media and digital streaming platforms. Their first season was shot Las Vegas in 2015 and their second season was shot during the Latin Alternative Music Conference in New York last year. Check out some of those performances and interviews on their YouTube Channel.

Hey musicians! If you’re in the Austin area during the SXSW dates and are interested in booking a performance or learning more about their series, feel free to reach out to their producers at info@theelevator.tv.

Seth Rogen on Adapting ‘Preacher’ From Comic to Series: ‘There’s No Line You Can’t Cross’

Seth Rogen pitched a series based on the controversial comic for 10 years until he got the green light.

Sitting down for a session focused on the making of Preacher, Seth Rogen, showrunner Sam Catlin, and original comic creator Garth Ennis gave behind-the-scenes explanations about how to keep the show grounded while still exploring blood, blasphemy, and what everybody else considers way too f*cked up. No Film School sat in on it and compiled some of the best points from the talk.

Be persistent—the industry might change

Rogen first recalled talking about how much he wanted to make this show on the set of Pineapple Express in 2006. “The project kept going to more qualified people, but we kept pursuing it. Eventually, we were the guys who were left. In that time, TV went from just a thing you watched on Thursday night, to a place where you could watch incredible things. In that decade, TV became the platform that could support something like this.”
