Hasselblad X1D Review – the perfect medium-format camera

Hasselblad X1D Review – the perfect medium-format camera

Let me start this review by saying that is the best product I have ever reviewed so far! Still a novelty but we love making reviews on ABDZ. Being able to test products and share our thoughts to you guys is quite rewarding; we will work effortlessly to do more in the upcoming new year. On the other hand, smartphones have changed so much during the course of 5 years time. Our standards are also higher in terms of features of what we want of our phone. We want a big battery, waterproof, fast charging and etc etc etc. For me, it’s all about the camera, I personally love photography. We all have heard the saying: “The best camera is the one you always have with you”, yes I can agree to that. As a user of the Google Pixel, it’s quite clear that I was ditching my DSLR at times, quite frequently to be honest. Well my perspective definitely have changed after using the Hasselblad X1D and let me tell you why.

This is the review of the world’s first 50mp compact mirrorless medium format camera, introducing the X1D by Hasselblad. I had the opportunity to try the X1D for one week, I tried my best to capture images in different situations including low light exposure. The results were so incredible that the images shown in this review are not edited, I really wanted to show you the quality of this camera and how this camera made me fall in love with photography even more.

My gear for the review

My first Impressions

When you first hold the X1D in your hands, you can feel and see how much work went into the ergonomic and compact design. Every single detail has been carefully designed, I loved the grip where it’s also the battery storage. There is a great balance in the grip between big hands and small hands when you actually hold the X1D. Pretty impressive! I love the minimal approach and limitation of physical buttons on the camera where you have your AF/MF, ISO, option dial, shutter and power. It’s pretty much everything you need. The camera comes with a rear LCD screen with touch control; it’s sharp and gorgeous. The user experience of the interface feels just like a smartphone. You can easily access the settings with swiping and pinch to zoom. Within less than a day and you can be pretty familiar with the touch screen. It’s overall a very splendid camera to look, it’s made of aluminium for a strong durability. There is also a note that says “Handmade in Sweden” that is just as big as the model signature. It’s a pretty bold statement and quite lovely.

Smartphone Vs Medium Format Sensor

As I mentioned earlier, the best camera is the one you always have with you. The X1D comes with a 50 megapixels CMOS large sensor powerful enough to basically capture anything. It’s a mirrorless design combined with autofocus lenses capable of taking very high-resolution images. I personally felt the autofocus was slow for my own style, I used the X1D for street photography where the action really is. It’s not recommended to do so but I wanted to test the X1D as if it was suiting my own photographic style. Besides that, the pictures I took were just breathtaking, you become suddenly in love with the simple things of life because you are now equipped with a performance camera that can capture the true natural colours. Here is a vivid representation of what your smartphone sensor is compared to a medium format like the X1D.

Hasselblad 3F Raw File vs JPEG

On the side of the X1D, there is dual slot for your SD cards, you would generally have them setup one for the RAW and the other one for JPEG. The X1D doesn’t shoot 50mp JPEG file, in fact the files are roughly around 5-6MB and 110MB for the RAW file. You can definitely use the JPEGs for sample and proofing but you won’t be able to have 50mp JPEG file.

Shooting with the Hasselblad X1D

During my week with the X1D, I took several rides around the city and tried to capture the city of Montreal in its authenticity. Shooting with this camera reminded of a beautiful track from a Korean movie: A Bittersweet Life, a song by Yuhki Kuramoto called “Romance”. Yes, you have heard it right, I totally fell in love with the X1D. There is so much passion in the making of this camera that it becomes part of you are or become. This experience really has made me fall in love with photography, even more than what I was before. I use photography as a medium to express my creativity and with the X1D, I was able to go beyond photographing things in its purest form. What do you see with your eyes gets captured and the results are exactly what you saw. That’s the beauty of the X1D because of its highest score on the DXOMark for its colour depth, dynamic range and low-light ISO. All the shots presented in this review are NOT edited.

Pros

  • Stunning ergonomic and compact design
  • 50mp medium-format pictures
  • Worth the investment

Cons

  • Slow autofocus
  • Battery life can be improved

Final Words

With the Hasselblad X1D, it is a clear statement that digital cameras are here to stay. We understand how technology has evolved and will continue to perfect the small sensor on the smartphones. But there is nothing more true to the essence of photography to carry your “big bulky camera” for a ride around your city, country or the world. Even though the Hasselblad X1D doesn’t come at a cheap price, I would personally invest my money for my own perfection.

Fantastic Digital Art by Dmitry Zaviyalov

Fantastic Digital Art by Dmitry Zaviyalov

Digital art can take you anywhere, it is just about let your imagination run free. Dmitry Zaviyalov shared this incredible illustration on his Behance profile that really accomplishes that. It features a village and it has this eerie mood. It reminds me of Zelda Breath of the Wild game to be hones, and that had become my favorite game of the year and probably ever. I was so amazed by the details and the style that I had to feature Dmitry’s illustration here.

Decided to spend a few days of my hard-earned holiday time to remind myself how much fun it can be to work on something personal. And it is fun! Hope the result is no to shabby either.

Dmitry is an illustrator from Tallinn, Estonia. I highly recommend that you check out his work at https://www.behance.net/creativedestructor/ – he was also kind enough to offer a step-by-step showing how he did this piece. You can check it out here.

2018 Visual Storytelling Trends to Watch For

Watch my video recording on the
Visual Storytelling Today show:

On the road?

When it comes to the evolution of storytelling, it’s important to note just how people are communicating with one another presently and how this could tip over the next few months. So before I lay out the five trends to watch in the visual storytelling space, let’s note three behavioral patterns around communications.

  • People are tiring of mass amplification on mass platforms. This doesn’t mean they don’t want to share their selfies or videos they’ve taken. It’s just that they are turning to SMS, messaging and small clusters of recipients. This shouldn’t be a surprise. The era of emailing a few of your friends a link to a story? Think about that but now remixed more with imagery than links.
  • The phone will still be the dominant creative and retrieval device. Yes, even in an era of AR (which you’ll read about below), a device that is only about 5cm x 12cm is the tool of dominance.
  • People are seeking to feel something. However, brands are trying to measure attribution. When this divide occurs, there is a major loss of translation. So what ends up happening is the brands that don’t worry about attribution as much as evoking feelings are talked about more than those with planned communications that customers sense as overtly “designed.”

With these behaviors noted, it’s important to now take a pivot to what to watch and plan for in 2018 when it comes to your visual storytelling design. I spoke at length about these recently on Cheddar TVand am happy to rehash here.

1. AR – We see AR all over: Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook. AR is easier to program and design with software like AR Kit for iOS 11 which means it’s not only something to watch, but something to learn how to program. The reason this will be used goes beyond simple PR. It lends to the fact people use their phones constantly and AR can unlock experiences unable to see in 2D. The other big part of this is in terms of customer experience. AR should not be something that lives in a silo but works with customer education, nurturing, relations and influence.

2. Phigital – Those who can tie the physical worlds of storytelling with the digital worlds will control the future in the near term. What I mean by this is designing a website with illustrious content is wonderful, but how do you make that come alive in the physical world? Is it through live roleplaying, alternative reality games or scavenger hunts? No longer should we be thinking of visual storytelling as simply a digital only role but one that lives within both the digital and physical matrix.

3. 3D – Like AR, 3D has taken over our senses. We are very likely to admit we’ve gone to a 3D movie or have watched 3D in a virtual reality experience. Now 3D is becoming unlocked through mobile to create experiences within physical spaces. The reason this is also picking up steam in popularity is due to emojis, avatars and animated GIF culture. What were once 2D phenomenons are now bleeding into 3D to live amongst social networks, video networks and physical art and design.

4. Voice enablement and skills – We have a tendency of forgetting that visual storytelling also includes aural or audio perceptions. It is very likely you are asking more questions of connected devices in 2017 and this will not slow down in 2018. You probably ask a number of questions to Siri, Google Home, Alexa or Cortana. These systems are still learning and producing what is known as “skills.” While visual storytellers may be big on imagery, they cannot forget about the fact behavior is also tied to what we know as ear goggles or headphones. How does one immerse themselves in learning after asking a question? This is still a new area not heavily populated by many that could grow in numbers as audio skills become a larger part of our day to day communication ecosystem.

5. Human Touch – Although bots are programmed conversations as a platform, the ones that have the best usage and response are those trained to sound like humans. The best people to do this are storytellers. Because there are so many nuances in human communication, it’s important for a bot to not look or sound like a machine. The more it does, the less likely people will want to interact with them. We’ve seen hundreds of these bots the past few years popping up on websites and asking “How may I help you?” But now we will see higher ends of programming with visualization, inforgraphics and business intelligence being served up when customers ask us questions. This is key in that no longer will bot communication look robotic, but it will feel more human. Just like someone draws a diagram on a whiteboard in a conference room, so too will bots be able to be programmed to provide this level of interaction.

Interaction Design & UI/UX: inTheaters. Mobile App

Interaction Design & UI/UX: inTheaters. Mobile App

We are taking a look at this mobile app concept called: inTheaters, designed by Arthur Galustyan. This is a combination of interaction design and UI/UX, the concept of the app is a mixture of IMDb and your favourite movie tickets app. What’s interesting is the fact that you can use it as a movie reference app with information on actors (actresses), movies and more. You can also purchase movie tickets as well. The UI is heavily inspired by iOS but I really dig the simplicity of the next step with a CTA at the bottom; It’s a really clean design/thinking. What do you think?

Arthur Galustyan is art director and lead UI/UX designer based in Kharkiv, Ukraine. With 8 years of experience, Arthur has a background in Web Design, UI/UX Design, Graphic Design, Logo, Infographic’s, Illustrations and more. Make sure to check out his Behance profile.

The concept for a mobile application that was executed based on the general rules of UX and Client Expirience. The application is an aggregator of cinemas, which displays actual sessions and a database of information on films…
